5 4 I "Bring me the winner!" THE story is told of a man dining in a restaurant, who was served a lobster with only one claw. Upon complaining he was told by the waiter that this happened occasionally because the live lobsters fought among themselves in the kitchen. ’’Bring me the winner!” said the diner. At the General Motors Proving Ground, a fleet of specimen cars, built long in advance of factory production, fight a battle of hills, bumps, and every other sort of torture. These cars arc torn down and rebuilt until they are . able to beat every test. The tests involve speed, power, endurance, braking, riding comfort, handling ease; fuel, oil, and tire economy; body strength—every phase of car construc- ' i tion.and performance. 3 Only the winner of all these tests is sent > < back to the factory to be used as a model for the construction of the car you buy. Thus, it is logical that motor manufacturers are paying more attention to designing safer car bodies and better lights and brakes. Non-shatterable glass and the four-wheel brakes have added their margin of safety to driving. And now, as a further safety factor, the all-steel body is being used exclusively on many lines of cars of all prices. The modern railroad eliminated wooden coaches in favor of steel cars and the modern automobile which must also protect life, has followed suit. PIANO TUNING Mr. Krimmel, the piano tuner, is here this week. Orders can be left with the Syracuse telephone operator. . 2-ltp

Letter from Foreign Country (Continued from Page one) his prowess he coaxed his little friend to follow him; but the latter, perhaps with presentiment of something dreadful, roundly refused to please him. The sea was rough, and at times the waves were so high as to hide the two from shore. “A long body with a rather large flat head and a half moon mouth appeared almost at his side, but the little fellow did not see it. The terrible fish seems to have scented his prey from afar and seen him in the miSst of the waters agitated by the wind, and swish —the greedy shark with his powerful jaws, armed with strong and sharp teeth, seized his victim by the left arm and carried him to the bottom, letting him go after removing the arm near the shoulder. “Bathed in blood, the boy rose to the surface and with agonizing shrieks called for help, but nobody dared go near the place of the tragedy; all looked on, terrified and stupefied. Not content with his first mouthful, the shark hastened to catch his victim again. The bloodstains, at times, tinted the foam of the waves, each time a little deeper red, and in the midst of this auerole of crimson appeared the mutilated body of the unhappy Juan Ramon. “Four men then drew near in a boat and recovered the mangled body of the victim, bringing it to shore- amid general expec-

tation. They laid in on a lonp piece of corrugated roofing, and then covered it with a sheet gr en by some compassionate soul of a nearby home. The little body had lost, in addition to the left arm, the right leg, while with another attack the teeth of the sea beast had torn the bowels into shreds from the ribs down and had removed the flesh from the left thigh. “Then to the boy’s home, today stricken with mourning, located on Perez Avenue near Loiza street, the body of the hapless Juan Ramon was carried, followd by an immense throng of people, most of them being bathers and school children.” Now it should not take away from the horror of the narrative if I were to suggest that perhaps it was not a shark that killed little Juan Ramon. There is another fish in these tropical waters more vicious than the shark and almost as long, though not so large around. This fish, called in Spanish “baraepda” can move about in waters so shallow as to discourage a shark, and can take a mouthful without the necessity of rolling over on its side. It just opens it’s large mouth and strikes. Those who have seen it say that its jaws are armed with a peculiar vicious looking set of teeth. This fish ! has accounted for many deaths | to the swimmers on the coast of Porto Rico. I see that this incident of the boy’s tragic death has taken ‘so much of my time that I must bring my letter to a close. I’ll let Clara tell the rest of the news. We are all well and our work is progressing splendidly along all lines. On Pentecost Sunday we shall receive many new members into our congregations. There are similarly good reports from other pastors in our mission here. We hope that you are all enjoying good health.
