I HOUSEHOLD HELPS Aq easy way , to sharpen scissors is to cut sandpaper. You will not have to wait for a grinder to come around. Tough meats can be made tender by adding a teaspoonful of lemon juice to the water in which they are boiled. When anyone is exposed to a contagious disease, use a gargle of equal parts of lemon juice and water, and drink strong lemonade frequently. Adding a slice or two of lemon to a cup of tea is a Russian fashion often followed in this country. Os course no milk or cream is served. I?repare potatoes for baking and let them stand in hot water for about a quarter of an hour before putting in an oven. In this way the heat will penetrate them and they will require only about half the ordinary time for baking. Talcum powder is cooling and a dusting of talcum after the bath is wonderfully refreshing. Talcum applied to the hands will make new’ gloves go on easier, and it is excellent to apply to the feet before putting on a new pair of silk stockings. The morning breakfast orange habit is something that should be started early in life. The tiny tot who trudges off to school each morning with an orange beneath his belt and another one in his school bag for recess is not likely to be among the undernourished children of his class. =—o SERIOUS FOREST FIRE Conservation department officials report a serious forest fire that swept over ' 700 acres of land in Harrison county, north of sta l e Highw’ay 62. This area is in one of the more isolated parts of the country surrounded by a rather thinly populated section in the Blue River drainage basin, and considearble damage was done. Richard Lieber, conservation director, calls attention that it will require 25 to 30 years to; restore this tract to its former state of producing timber, and for the small cost of less than one per cent, per acre per year', this land could be. protected by fire towers, thug insuring a timber crop and beautifully wooded hills for future generations. Reports to the state forestry office show this fire burned three days and was extinguished only when it reached streams and roads that formed natural barriers to further spread. Q ST A RTLI NG FIG UR ES All anyone has to do to get an idea of what a rich and wonderful country he lives in, is to read some of the figures for 1928 being sent out by the government bureaus. Who would have thought that this country last year raised a tomato crop that brought $40,000,000 to its producers? Or who w’ould imagine that the cucumber crop amounted to over $8,000,000; that cranberry pickers harvested over $7,000,000 worth of that product; that the bean crop exceeded $14,000,000 or that the cabbage crop ran better than $23,000,000? And yet these are among the smaller crops raised in this country. The report for 1928 shows that the corn crop was valued at $2,132,000,891, and the combined winter and spring wheat crops $877,193,000. The cotton crop brought $1,523,512,000, while hay, something too many people are apt to overlook as a big money crop, had a total value of $1,243,350,000. The total of all crops raised in the United States, as given in Uncle Sam’s figures, amounted to SB,456,052,000, and even then it was something like $60,000,000 short of the total of 1927. There can’t be anything radically wrong with a country thatproduces more than eight billion dollars worth of products from the soil in a single year. Add to that the many more billions ■produced in our factories, and taken from our forests, mines, lakes, rivers and oceans, and you will understand why we lead the world in everything worth while. o See Corinne Griffith and Edmond Lowe in “The Outcast,” a fine society drama that is different, at the Crystal.
