NEW SPRING COTTONS APPEAR; NEW VERSIONS OF PUPPY PURSE W fl 1 ■fl z--4 i 1 Tv I " SMHHT.’ * I
A WORTHY New Year’s resolu- ■ tion—get at the family sewing 9 cheerfully and without delay. If. 9 perchance, you are lacking ir in- |s spiration to carry out this most a excellent resolve, take “a day off” 9 from home and spend it sauntering as through the aisles in the wash ma- 9 terial section. Not even a mid- |« winter flower show in a conserva- 9 tory can offer a more entrancing sight than that of these spring fabrics. Everywhere a blaze of cultr, which is true not only of the solidtoned weaves, but especially so when It comes to the very spectacular prints. At sight of these new smart cottons you will be wanting to sew as you have never sewed before. That it Is to be a tremendously * Important season for cottons is a foregone conclusion. Prominence is given to both plain and printed effects. In the making up of solid-colored chambrays, poplins, ginghams, broadcloths and pongees special stress Is placed on giving them a tailored styling. One of the outcomes of this trend is that cotton materials thus fashioned are lifted out of the ordinary house and porch dress class into the realm of gowns which are suitable for many informal afternoon occasions. . By the way, that length of gingham, or was It pongee or wash crepe which you simply couldn’t resist buying at first sight—want to know how to make it? Well, the gown in the picture Is a charming style. Even the amateur dressmaker need not hesitate to undertake copying It. The medium for this model happens to be a very fine two-toned blue to violet gingham. It is piped in robin’s egg blue with buttons to match. It would be very handsome in one of the very fashionable plain beige shades, or in the lovely lime green hue which is one of the new colors. This frock ad heres strictly to the tailored styling now so voguish for wash goods. The straight tunic effect’is simply a panel

Remember the tri-tone effects given to jerseys and satins and crepes? Yon should see how exquisitely solidcolored cottons yield to this treatment Try it! Use the-material In three degrees of colors, say brown, tan and cream together or three tones of peach. To be sure.it requires lots if seamings, but the effect is worth the few extra stitches. There is no end to the clever effect? possible in the way of sun-ray inlays, tiers in graduated colors and other equally as artful designs. ' Seems as if those funny little puppy pocketbooks ■ which our young modems have lately been cuddling in their arms, to the amusement of lookers-on, are not such a passing fad as one would suppose. These canine novelties are actually invading the world of fashion tn Increasing numbers and Vogue for Velvet Gown* The vogue of velvet has been given greater impetus by the introduction of the very sheer transparent velvet. Latest Paris collections do not stop at the fluffy poodle-dog types which have been such favorites here, but include many proud-looking thoroughbreds ranging all the way from poms and chows to bulldogs. In keeping with their patrician type some of these manufactured pets are "all dolled up” with fine satin ribbon bows at their necks, like the little pedigreed aristocrat made of black plush which has been having its “picture taken,” as shown to the right in this illustration. The pugnacious little bull-pup in the lower left corner In this group looks dangerously fierce, but that is just what his pretty mistress admires in him most, for when they a-strolllng go it will be quite flattering to stage a “beauty and the beast” appearance. Some one has aptly referred to these canine novelties as “watchdogs of the treasury”—a name singularly appropriate considering that their mission really is to stflbd guard over milady’s valuables. A study of their anatomy reveals a zipper fastening (see the little figure at the bottom of this group).
This quick-as-lightning contrivance when opened reveals a sure-enough pocketbook interior fitted up as daintily as you please, and offering hiding place for one’s money, sips ick, powder pnff, mirror and all the little vanities so essential to feminine happiness and appearance. Please to observe that the happy gingham bow-wow which the fair ceed is carrying is not a pocketbook type at all but a mascot dog introduced at the Army-Yale football game.- Being light in weight and stuffed with cotton these pups are as harmless as a hat to toss in the air when one gets excited over the play. Somebody conceived the idea of making these gingham mascots op in college colors. The fad of carrying them to the game has spread like wildfire, where their presence causes any amount of enthusiasm among the cheering crowd present JULIA BOTTOMLEY. (ft 1938. I The BABY (
Why do so many, many babies of today escape all the little fretful spells and infantile ailments that used to worry mothers through the day, and keep them up half the night? If you don’t know the answer, you haven’t discovered pure, harmless Castoria. It is sweet to the taste, and sweet in the little stomach. And its gentle influence seems felt all through the tiny system. Not even a distasteful dose of castor oil does so much good. Fletcher’s Castoria is purely vegetable, so you may give it freely, at first sign of colic; or constipation; or diarrhea. Or those many times when you just don’t know what is the matter. For real sickness, call the doctor, always. At other times, a few drops of Fletcher’s Castoria. The doctor often tells you to do just that; and always says Fletcher’s. Other preparations may be just as pure, just as free from dangerous drugs, but why experiment? Besides, the book on care and feeding of babies that comes with Fletcher’s Castoria is worth its weight in gold!

At Least Would Haas Beecher’s Good Wishes A capital Henry Ward Beecher story is told by Joseph Bucklin Bish op in “Notes and Anecdotes of Many Years.” At a Friday evening prayer meeting—Mr. Bishop was present—a man arose and with an air of “Watch me now and see me put him a poser." asked Mr. Beecher a question—lt being question time. “I should lik® to suppose,” he said, “the case of a man who lives an, upright and moral life; who is a faithful husband, a kind and generous father, a good citizen, taking part in all good works, gives freely to charity; in short, leads a life above reproach. Yet he is a pronounced disbeliever in Christianity, never goes to church and is nothing less than an atheist “Now, Mr. Beecher. 1 should like to ask you: ‘Where does that man go when he dies?’ ” Without changing his position Mr Beecher with an engaging smile, replied: “He would have my good wishes wherever he goes.” Royal Gift to City A royal villa containing one of the finest collections of porcelain, china, glass, crystals, ceramics and enamels in the world has been piesented to the City of Naples by the <vidow of Count di Marsi, and has been publicly opened as a museum by the king of Italy. The mpseum is the Villa Floridiana, where once lived Ferdinand IV. king of the Two Sicilies. The collection fills 21 rooms, and consists of 10.000 pieces. Among the prized exhibits are several Sevres cups used by Marie Antoinette of France. The collection Includes rare specimens of wares from famous potteries and glass works throughout Europe and Asia. /nstilin From Acorns Insulin from acorns is now an accomplished fact, according to reports from Germany. It will be placed on the market soon, says an item reprinted in the Medical Journal and Record. This vegetable insulin will be concentrated in tablet form, and will be, it is expected, cheaper than the type now gotten from animals. Insulin has usually been derived from the pancreas of freshly killed animals, but. it is not confined to the pancreas alone. Professor Brugsch of Berlin, who discovered the way to make insulin from acorns, found in his researches that the substance occurred. especially in plants where much starch is formed. Expectation of Life Modern science has destroyed the tradition of “a shout life and a merry one,” writes Dr. Donald B. Armstrong in the North American Review. The life of the average modern is longer and merrier than that of a century ago. The average expectancy of life at birth has been increased from twenty-eight years in 1789 to fortyeight at the present time. The Manx language is dying out. The number of Manxland , residents who can speak the language has dropped from 4,657 to 915 in 20 years.
