CIRCUS AT ELKHART j Circus fans and enthusiasts are keenly interested in the forthcoming exihibitions in Elkhart on August 10 of the HagenbeckWallace Circus, known as the foremost trained wild animal show in the universe. Many folks from this community are making arrangements to attend the big circus, as HagenbeckWallace universally is known for its high-class performance. Hagenbeck-Wallace comes this year with an entirely new program from the grand and glittering opening spectacle, "The Geisha” to the closing finale. "Blazing - Glory.” Several hundred people appear in “The Geisha.” which is from the pen of Rex Deßoselli, noted moving picture author and director. A small fortune has been expended in the purchase and wardrobe costumes from leading New York and Tokio firms, while singers of* note will have the principal roles • Clyde Beatty, Bob McPherson} and Capt. Bernard are a fpv of the famous trainers that will subjugate the jungle beasts in< the steel arena. Beatty will work a mixed group of lions and} tigers, numbering over a twenty. ; while McPherson will handle sis- j teen ferocious Siberian tigers. Another mixed group of pumas. ; leopards, bears and hyenas will! be put thru their paces by Ber-J nard. Many other wild animal numbers will be presented, as' well as displays by domestic beasts. Prominent arenic features include the Orrin Davenport Troupe of Equestrians and the: Ward Kimball Family of Flyers, | The Davenports are rated amongj the first American riders, while j the Ward-Kimballs are direct from a successful tour of Europe. Other aerialists of note are the Martin Sisters, the Sylvester Trio and the Steele Sisters. Fifty clowns, exactly that number, will scamper about the hippodrome track. o The situation in China has re-' solved itself into a struggle between six or seven war lords for personal power regardless of the welfare of the nation. It is said that each one has his own personal observers in the headquarters of opponents, but despite this precaution treachery runs rampant. * o Fraulein Thea Rasche. the >German girl who is in the United States to fly her little airplane cannot understand why it should cause any particular interest. 11 I ! HOUSEHOLD HINTS i ‘"77 ' ' i Good corn bread can be made with either sweet or sour milk, i Whipped cream is not only a pleasantly luxurious addition to a dessert, but a food in itself. It; is not needed after a rich hearty dinner, but is appetizing; and su‘ able after the lighter type cf meals served in the summer time. When steaming a pudding in a coffee can, the lid must be securely fastened on. but if a small hole is pierced in the top to let the steam escape there will be less need of tying the lids on and the pudding will not become too moist. Specialists have found that the meat proteins not only have as high food value when eaten in a mixed diet as 'when eaten alone, but they greatly increase ! the nutritive value of the cereal ior vegetable proteins. Thus the ; proteins in the bread of a ham sandwich become more nutri- ; tious w hen eaten in comb:nation with the meat. Cottage cheese is high in food value. It contains all the constituents of milk, excepting the cream. Like milk, cottage cheese ; is a source of protein, wh-ch is used to build and repair body ! tissue. There are many dishes which can be made with cottage 1 cheese. Cottage cheese served plain is especially pleasing in summer. Many people like it with rich cream, and a little salt or with cream and sugar. Sour | cream, or melted butter, improi ves the flavor of cottage cheese, i and increased the food value. | Cottage cheese makes a delicious sandwich filling, especially for the picnic season of the year. For sandwiches, moisten the cheese with sweet cream , and flavor it with a little chopped parsley, chopped or sliced olives, sliced celery, pi men toes, horseradish, Spanish onions pickles, or nuts. Some people like the fla- > vor of caraway seeds in cottage cheese. This spread is equally good on White bread, rye bread, nut bread, or brown bread. - I The origin of our jury system with its “twelve good men and true” is so ancient that historians have been unable to agree on time or place. In England and Scotland arbitration is rapidly taking the place of jury trials, and judging from the sneers jeers and ridicule heaped on its hoary head by jerirts and business men. it will not be many years until it will be abolished in the United States. QUAIL AND RABBITS Reports to the offices of the conservation department indicate an unusually large number of quail and rabbits. Motorists driving Hoosier highways say that at night some of the traffic lanes are literally alive with young rabbits that scurry to cover as the cars approach. Practically every section where quail customarily are found reports many covers and at the close of a tranquil summer day when a mid-season sun gently glides down l>eyond the distant horizon, this great game bird’s penetrating call may be heard on every side as he whistles merrily from meadow and golden yellow wheat field. In late years land owners have learned that it is not the legal hunting that decimates the quail crop; rather the cold icy winters when shelter and food are problems To aid in the pernetuat’on of this bird many land owners provide sanctuary by leaving a brush pile in fence comers and they also see the birds are fed and watered during such times when the elements prevent their natural hunting for food by reason of deep snow or ice-encased landscapes. o — •"Avigator” is another new word that must be added to your dictionary. Navigator applies to navigation of the water, and avigation to navigation of the air.

Agent Steward Learning and reports a loss of 8 per cent, mostly from over crowding. M ILL LINDBERGH GET IT’ Seventeen years ago Ed Howe, a newspaperman of Atchinson, Kan., wrote that whenever anyone made a flight across the Atlantic he could come to his office and collect $1,000,000. He thought such an event impossible. The years went on without anyone attempting to collect and Howe soon forgot that he ever made such a promise. - ' Now, however, he finds that he owes, “Lucky” Lindbergh” the million. Lindbergh hasn’t been around to collect yet because Howe hasn’t invited him to, but the newspaperman promises, in the event he makes a million from the autobiography he is writing that he will pay Colonel Charlie. o_ The Journal 52 times a vear for $2.
