Much, probably most, of the world's evi!-s and sorrows are due to ignorance, to the lack of an understanding heart. War and hatred, bigotry and misunderstanding. come largely byway of the blind alley of self-satisfied ignorance of what others are and what they stand for. and ignorance of the results of earnest, sincere, painstaking scientific labors. It begins only too often with ignorance of self. It proceeds with an ignorant sense of superiority over people of other nations and origins. It is far removed and .strays always further away from the understanding heart of brotherhood. The sin of ignorance is two fold, it is the ignorance of groups other than our own. it is ignorance of our own best thought and ideals. The best democracy cannot exist either *in ignorance or prejudice and certainly not without freedom of learning. Knowledge is not only power but it is freedom. Group strife is the rock upon which every civilization has split.

We are justly proud of our educational institutions. They have done much to raise .the level of American intelligence. But they can do more by broadening the outlook of our children so that the men and women of tomorrow will better understand all their human brethren"and reach out to them in brotherhood. o ?
