Huge Presses Shape Buick Parts ■ ar 4 Ki afSr
A GREAT variety of important pasts are stamped from sheet meta! in the huge presses such as the one shown above. In order to eliminate extra operations which would add to the cost of the finished cur. many complicated dies must be developed to produce a certain part in as few operations as possible. Fender*, body panels, radiator shells, hoods and couls must be pe feet if they are to lock right ontfre car. A slight imperfection in the atari j'ing would be magnified many times and made glaring after painting and assembling. Therefore, only the finest steel and the most efficient machinery is used. |

Every workman is on the lookout for flaws in his work, and rigid inspection is the rule throughout the plant. Buick radiator shells are stamped in one piece on a press similar to the one shown. The shell is polished, copper plated, and again polished. The copper plate prevents rust. It is then given a heavy coat of nickel plate and given a final polish, after which it is assembled with a previously tested radiator core. The press in the illustration stamps the Buick cowl in one operation by means of an expanding die. The die prevents wrinkles and imperfections by stretching the cold ttcel j as it shapes the part.

We do not find a record of any military prison on the Island, though soldiers may have been held in detention there. The neighboring Governor’s island has a millr tary prison. It is interesting to note that Bedloe's island or Liberty Island has lately been transferred to civil status, having heretofore been etmsidered a part of the military poet of Fort Wood. By proclamation, tn 192.4, the atatoe was made a national monument and tts base a national park. The government now makes sei>arate appropriations for the army post on the island and for the upkeep of the statue, most of this being for lighting.— Washington Star.
