LAKE WAWASEE
South Shore. Mr. Wertz spent several days in his old home in Edinburg, last week. He says Wawasee will be his permanent home in the future. He intends to improve his farm in many ways and to be able to supply the finest milk, fruits and vegetables on the lake. Mr. and Mrs. Elias Gray, and family went to Kimmel last week to attend the funeral of Mrs. Gray’s father, Charles Thomas. Mrs. Grohnert of Elkhart, and Miss Meyers of Lafayette, have been spending a few days at the Grohnert cottage. They have had electricity installed and the place generally cleaned up in condition for the season. Mr. and Mrs. Boland of the Lake View hotel arrived last w’eek for the season. The hotel will officially open Decoration Day. Mrs. Boland reports that thieves broke in last winter and stole linen and a number of valuable things. The Journal announced last muter that the hottd had been broken in. The hotel has a number of Wawdsee Protective Association cards on the doors. An outside lattice work was also taken for a wind shield by some fishermen on the ice. Lights were seen late last fall in the hotel after it was closed. The -Misses Merriam, Ruth and Helen Weaver are visiting their grandparents in Marion for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Royce of Edinburg, were guests at the AVertz farm this last week. Mrs. A. L. Jordan has been making a number of improvements on her farm. They are very much enthused over the lake and the farm. Rev. and’ Mrs. Seaman are at their cottage for a few days getting their home ready for the seasons Dr. McGarvey, of the Vawter Park hotel, is making a number of improvements. He is putting concrete landings in place of wooden om*s, also a new lower landing. There will be electric lights on the veranda and down on the landings; Airs. W. R. Parks has Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arnold, of Chicago, for guests this week. Mrs. Arnold will be remembered as the writer of the song “Won’t You Save A Cozy Corner,” and later as one of the seven American beauties taken abroad by the late Chas. Frohman. Mrs. Arnold has a number of old friends on the lake. T. F. Vaughn, of Wabash, spent the week end at his cottage, Red Gables, motoring up with his family Saturday and returning Monday. Dr. McGarvey suggests that the guides register their names and telephone numbers at each hotel and when they are busy that they notify each hotel. Also that people qualified to act as guides do likewise. Any one who understands fishing’ on this lake and knows the shore can qualify. The road back of Lake View is unsightly. It is a bad thing to have such an important road to this shore in such a bad condition, made so by the dumping of refuse along the road. Mrs. Boland owns that strip of swamp bank south of the present road and she says anyone can dump there if they will carry the refuse back into the swamp, away from the road. She insists that the dumping along the road must cease. AVe hope she makes it stronger than that. Some of the men who travel the road along this shore throw their empty bottles along the road. Its a bad practice for many reasons. The bottles are eventually broken and the pieces of glass get into the roadway doing damage to man, beast and autos. Last week we had an item about about two young lady visitors in Syracuse. AVe find they were old friends of Syracuse and hence callers. We should have known. AVe desire to give all the news along this shore in this column. AVe suggest that everyone along the South Shore write down any news interesting to this shore and mail it to the correspondent or the Journal or put it on the ice in the ice box and we will call with the ice man. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Feltz of
Chicago Junction, were at their cottage over Sunday. The pipe under the road south of the Ditton hotel, needs immediate attention. The high water in the. ditch has caused two sections to sink, leaving large'holes along the road. Jessie Rentfrow is laid up with a poisoned hand. He has had to go to Elkhart to see a specialist. Airs. Clara Church and son of Warsaw, spent Sunday with Rev. and Airs. Seaman. A large part of last week the weather was too wild for the fishing to be good. Airs. Boyd at Ditton’s, caught a seven pound pike and medium strings of eight to ten bass were caught by some of the men at that resort. At Vawters there were only one or two cases where the limit was caught. The water it still too cold for any record catches. Dr. 11. H. Rogers was expected at his cottage Sunday, when a final disposition of the AVawasee Amusement Co., boat would hav£ been made but he was called to Indianapolis by a telegram stating his father was critically ill. The following guests are registered at the hotels: Ditton’s, Geo. Buskirk, T. Sch-. loss, O. E. Anthony, Indianapolis: L. N. Allman, Chicago; Ashton Sedgewick, F. Ackerman, I. Al. Baum, Ligonier; H. Air. Bishop, of the AVawasee Alarine Supply Co., has just completed a number of improvements in his home. He had 14 boats rented out Saturday. Because of the ill health of Airs. Durand, that family will not be at the lake this summer. Al any on the lake will miss this genial family. Subscriptions are being sought to build an electric light and power line along the' entire north shore. The best wishes of everyone on the lake is extended to whomsoever buys and opens the AA awasee Inn this season. It is a popular hostlery and the entire lake crowd is interested in its future welfare.
