’are PREPARING - FOR Bib SEASON Syracuse Merchants Extending Cordial Invitation to Farmers The Syracuse merchants are extending a special invitation to the farmers through the columns ot the Journal this week. They are taking a full page and are pot sparing ex pense to let the dwellers contigent to Syracuse know that their patronage is appreciated. They want you to make Syracuse your trading point and while they do not make specific the many advantages to be mutually derived, most of our rural friends will see the benefits. Syracuse can not grow without increasing the value of the farms around it, and also without increasing the value of .many of the farm products. If you spend your money in our town, we will grow that much more and our growth is the farmer’s gain. Our stores are just beginning to show spring goods and we beg you to inspect them before you buy. Make our schools your schools; come to our churches; do business with our merchants. It will forge our community interests into a compact, irresistable force for betterment of local conditions. Syracuse Defeated Syracuse was defeated at Warsaw last Friday night at basket ball. Fishing Has Been Poor Fishing through the ice has not been a pronounced sucsess on our lakes this winter. Some fish a have been caught but the catches have been less than average. Barnhart Renominated For the fourth time, Henry A. Barnhart, was nominated for congress by the Democrats at their con vention held in South Bend, Monday. The selection was unanimous. Witness Missing The trial of Cleo Weaver, charged with beating Officer Hummel at Nappanee, has been stopped at Goshen, owing to the illness of the principal witness, Vern Wagner, who has typhoid fever., A Beautiful Day Last Sunday saw the majority of our residents walking about the town and enjoying the fine March weather. By keeping your eyes away from the snow banks that still lay in the shadows, you could almost make yourself believe it was summer. ' State Entomologist Here Charles Baldwin of Indianapolis, state entomologist, was in the city yesterday enroute to Syracuse. He, with his deputy, Frank Kindig of Elkhart, is making an investigation into the results of using the California spray fluid, which is being used in this section. Mr. Baldwin will return to Goshen this evening and will make a report on his findings, —Friday’s Goshen Democrat. Democratic Caucus The Democratic caucus was held in Syracuse last Saturday and the following delegates were selected: state convention, G. 0. Smith; congressional convention, B. F. Hoopingarner; joint representive convention Fred Hindererer and Eston McClintic. The candidacy of C.C. Bachman for the nomination of county auditor, was heartily approved and it was agreed to support him at the county convention as long as there was a possible chance. The “Fats” Win In the double-header basket ball meet at the gymnasium last Thursday night, the old saying, “There’s no fool like an old fool,” was proved to have some truth. In the first game the first team defeated the second high school team in a nicely played game. The star event of the evening was then offered. To tell of all the funny plays and the amusing situations would take an entire page and to tell of the after effects would take the entire paper. Several different brands of cripples were in evidence ou- the street Friday and one was confined to his bed. The score was 6to 8 at the finish in favor of Sam’s team, and Sam is correspondingly elated.
Wields Strong Pressure The ice on Lake Wawasee has forced the shore to heave up in many places. The ice has been unusually thick and its great weight has been sufficient to raise large stones, used for sea walls, to a height of several feet. M. E. Conference The program of the annual meeting of the North Indiana conference of the Methodist church, which will be held in Mishawaka, March 29, to April 5, is announced. One thousand delegates are to have part in the convention, including more than 300 ministers. Among the distinquished persons in attendance will be Bishop McDonald of Chicago, Bishop Henderson of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Bishop Oldhan of New York City. FREE SEEDS ARE HERE ANNUAL ALLOTMENT FOR THIS COMMUNITY READY FOR DISTRIBUTION AT THIS OFFICE Readers of the Journal and others in this community who have not already been supplied with Government garden seeds by Congressman Barnhart will find a supply at the Journal office which will be given out to those who call for them. Children will not be supplied without specific orders from a parent, and those who want to try some of these seeds should call at once as the supply is limited, and those who call early will most .surely be supplied. These seeds are furnished by the Government for experimental purposes, and each package has several varieties. Suit to Contest Will Suit has been filed in the Kosciusko circuit court asking that the will of the late Nathaniel Crow be set aside. The plantiffs are Charles and Cora Crow and the defendants Martha M. Fick, Lulu Doll, Theris Doll, Byron Doll. Rae Knox and Violet Doll. According to the complaint, Nathaniel Crow, who died Nov. 2,1912, left an estate valued at about $30.0001| The will, declared by the plaintiffs to be invalid left the property as follows: Onefourth to Martha M. Fick; one-eighth to Charles and Cora Crow; onetwelfth, Theris Byron and Lulu DolL one eighth to Rae Knox and Violet Doll. Martha M. Fick was named executrix. The plaintiffs claim that Nathaniel Crow was of unsound mind and that undue influence was used when the will was made. Takes Vulcan Agency E. E. Strieby has a new “Vulcan” roadster, that makes a fine appeararnce. It is a medium-priced car and Mr. Strieby has taken the agency for this section. Can’t Report It The Basket ball game, Monday afternoon, played by teams composed of girls will have to go unreported. We couldn’t meet some of the requirements imposed on the spectators Platting Lake Shore Deputy County Surveyor Sellers was at Lake Wawasee several days last week establishing lines between the land owned by J. E. Rarick and the Nathaniel Crow estate. Mr. Rarick is platting a portion of his land into lots. A petition is being ciruulated to move the road that runs by the Rarick residence back 150 feet so that the land can also be platted. A MESSA6ETO WOMEN Who Are “Just Ready to Drop.” When you are “just ready to drop,” •when you feel so weak that you can hardly drag yourself about—and because you have not slept well, you get up as tired-out next morning as when you went to bed, you need help. Miss Lea Dumas writes from Malone, N. Y., shying: “I was in a badly run-down condition for several weeks but two bottles of Vinol put me on my feet again and made me strong and well Vinol has done me more good than all the other medicines I ever took.” If the careworn, run-down women, the pale, sickly children and feeble old folks around here would follow Miss Dumas’ example, they, too, would soon be able to say that Vinol, our delicious cod liver and iron remedy, had built them up and made them strong. It is a wonderful, strength creator and body-builder, and we sell it under a guarantee of satisfaction. You get your money back if Vinol does not help you. Quality Drug Store, Syracuse
PASSED JUDGMENT FOR SIOO $5,000 SLANDER ACTION SETTLED IN GOSHEN COURT The SSOOO slander action brought by Mrs. Josephine Woods vs Samuel Unrue and venued to Elkhart county from Kosciusko county, was compromised in the circuit court last week, when Judge Drake gave the plaintiff judgment for SIOO and costs. This litigation grew out of the canvass to carry Turkey Creek township (Syracuse and Lake Wawasee), Kosciusko county, for local option. Mrs. Woods is the wife of Milton Woods and an active member of the W. C. T. U. She was for driving out saloons. Samuel Unrue who lives in Syracuse, favored saloons and in arguing in behalf of the wets and commenting upon Mrs. Woods’ activities, he is alleged to have said that he could not understand whv she favored local option, as he knew that w’hile her husband conducted the Lake View hotel, that they sold booze there in violation of the law. When Mrs. Woods heard these statements coming from Unrue she demanded a retraction and he demurred. Then came the law suit, with the settlement last week as the outcome.— Goshen Democrat. WILL RE-ADVERIISE OUCH CHALBECK DITCH BIDS WILL HAVE TO BE REPEATED i i »mi Joseph Kimmel and Authur Coil, county auditor and county surveyor, respectively, of Noble county, were in Syracuse last Thursday conferring with Gale and Rossen relative to i heir bid on the Chaibeck ditch in Sparta township, Noble county, Gale and Rossen’s bid was over SI,OOO lower than their competitor’s, but still the latter was awaided the contract. Upon the return of the Albion officials to their home, Thursday night, they requested the other man to withdraw but this he refused to do, and as a consequence the contract wifi be re-advertised in the Albion papers and new bids will be submitted. New Speed Boat The coming season portends a great increase in speed boats on Lake Wawasee. Frank Remy will have a new boat powered with a six-cylinder Scripps engine and expects to make better than 25 miles an hour. There are several others rumored of which we have no authentic information. Operation For Injured GiH Miss Helene Lentz of Milford who was injured in the auto accident at Woods crossing last spring in which Miss Lucile Fryberger lost her life, has been taken to Chicago where she will undergo an operation to be performed by Dr. Murphy. She has not entirely recovered from the effects of the accident. Big Casting The Gilderman Manufacturing and Foundry Co. are putting out some large castings. In the rough, they weigh one ton.
