38 YEARS AGO. Taken From The Files Os The Syracuse Enterprise Os 38 Years Ago. J. A. Quackenbush of Ligonier has been stoping in town for several days past. Benton blacksmiths now have their coal shipped to this place via the B. & 0. railroad. The Goshen times notices the birth of twins in that city under the head of “double trouble.” One exchange speaks of there being a fair prospect of a heavy crop of cranberries this season. Some unknown friend. John W. Ott perhaps, has sent us a copy of the Harlan (Iowa) Herald. We believe that Perry Wilden is sole proprietor of the Syracuse harness shop, Mr. Fuller having retired. Trains loaded exclusively with peaches, are daily passing over the B. &0. railroad for Chicago from the east. Mr. 0.0. Felkner, attorney-at-law, has left town, and, we believe, intends to commence the practice of his profession at, Milford. We understand that Mr. A. C. Cory, of this vicinity, has been at Three River, Mich., for several weeks for the benefit of his health. Mr.tfS. B. Frazier and a Mr. Pershing, of Warsaw, were in town on Sunday. They spent an hour or two at the Island House on Nine Mile Lake. We are glad to see that John AKetring has so far recovered as to be able to be out on the streets again, John is now but a shadow of his former self. Quite a number of the leading citizens of Milford were in town on Sunday. Among the number were Davis Gibson, Pret. Miles, Thos. B. Felkner, J. L. Henderson and others. We understand that Geo. W. Shaffer has invented a very simple machine, to be used by section men in raising the track of railroads, which promises to make that work much more easy, and save the labor of one hand, at least. We believe
he intends to apply for a patent. At last work has been commenced on the engine house at the elevators. It is to be of stone and brick, about 18 by 24 we believe, and will be quite a durable building. All the railroad buildings of this place are first-class in every respect. Mr. Wm. Strieby, who is an extensive grape-grower of this vicinity informs us that the grape crop will be almost a total failure this season. Mildew attacked the leaves of the Isabella and Delaware varieties, and now the vines are bare of foliage to protect the fruit, while the Concords are beginning to rot on the vines. Since it has became apparent that the Baltimore & Ohio railroad really intends to erect its machine shops at Garrett, that place is rapidly increasing in population. Extensive machine shops, round house, and other railroad buildings are in course of erection, and ’no doubt the place will become a place considerable importance in a short time. We received a call on Thursday last from Dr. Norr, of Auburn, Ind., who informs us that he has purchased the tract of land upon which “Conklin’s Hili” is located, and that he will probably take up his residence here. He contemplates planting about ten acres of the land in grape vines. We received a copy of the premium list, and rules and regulations of the nineteenth annual fair of the Kosciusco county agricultural society, which is to be held at Warsaw, on the 29th and 30th of Sept, and Oct. Ist 1875. The bank of California, an institution which was considered perfectly sound, suddenly failed on Thursday last carrying the utmost consternation and dismay into financial, circles on the Pacific Coast. Ralston, its President resigned, and then committed suicide by drowning in the bay, having fist taken poison it is asserted.
