38 YEARS AGO. Taken From The Files Os The Syracuse Enterprise Os 38 Years Ago. Rain, more, rain. Hot, hotter, hottest. E. M. Chaplin has taken up his residence in the school building. Farmers are busy making preparations for harvest which is just on hand. We received a call from Dr. Barker and E. M. Dennis of Benton, on Saturday. * — We believe that Sam. Bashore has shut down his saw mill until after harvest? I, We believe that Milt Patterson has sold his interest in the Syracuse harness shop. Etna Green is talking of incorporating. Fogyism does not predomi nate in that enterprising burg. Dick Davison has moved into the old school building on the corner of Washington! and Harrison streets. We understand that Wm. S. Cobb has secured the contract for fencing the the railroad track from this place to Milford Junction. A new sidewalk has been put down in front oftthe property formerly owned by Wm. H. Griffith but now occupied by Chas. Cady. Our young friend, Lase H. Tompson, of Elkhart county, has taken a position as clerk in the store of a Mr. Ferrier, at New Paris. The prospects for the erection of the elevators at this place in time for the shipment of the new crop of wheat is not very flattering. The Auburn Republican says that the foundation for the new roundhouse at Garrett is nearly com pleted, and the buiding, when’finished, will accommodate thirty-five engines. From all parts of the country we learn that the prospects are good for an immense crop of potatoes this year. If nothing happens the crop between this time and the close of the season, potatoes will be. doubtless, plenty and cheap this fall and winter. Among the shipments from Syracuse during last week, was a box of bullfrogs. There were perhaps about 400 in the box, and their croaking made music about the depot while they were waiting for the train. They were consigned to Ft. Wayne. We understand that Benjaman Whitten of Webster, this county, who was arrested on a charge of incest with his own daughters, is now at large. The offense was committed in Whitley county, and some hook or crook he was discharged. We believe that he has left the country. We understand that Mr. J. L. Lape of this place, has sold his flourj ing mill here to Mr. N. Crow, a farm er residing in 'this township, and that possession will be given on the first of August next. We understand that the mill property alone was sold, Mr. Lape reserving his land and town property. It is rumored on the streets that it was sold for the sum of $12,000, which, if true, was very cheap, as this is a first-class mill and the water a good one. Through the enterprise and go-ahead-itiveness of the Syracuse silver cornet* band, preparations had been made on an extensive scale for a celebration of the anni versary of the Independance of America on Saturday, July 3rd, in consequence of the Fourth coming on the Sabbath this year. A gala day was anticipated, as everything had been done to make it pheasant and suit the tastes of all classes of people. A large number of small boats were in readiness to take the people on excursions upon the lake, while the little steamer upon Nine Mile Lake made regular trips from the railroad bridge to every point interest on the shores of the For the accommodation of those who love to trip the “light fantastic” in the mazy dance, a grand bower had been erected upon the lake shore and refreshments of every description were provided for the dancers and others. The base ball clubs of Milford and and New Paris played their second match gaet£e at this place on that occasion, which was new to many of our citizens, and was witnessed by several hundred people.
