Story of Two Mules. Some people about our lake can tell some pretty big fish stories but for a change we will give you a story of two mules, taken from the Journal Gazette which we think eelpse them all. Mathias Bast, of Edwardsville, Ills , probably ow F es his life to the fact that he was kicked acrose a haystack by two mules only three times. The mules were situated on opposite sides of the stack, and only a faulty aim of one mule prevented Bast from playing a ping-pong role until the mules tired out. Bast has three broken ribs, fractured collar bone and bruises and cuts all over his body.. He admits dhat even with his strong constitution he would have been able to nake the strenuous trans-stack trip only a few more times. The mules, vho were becoming proud of their catting average, seemed put out when they were made to desist from die exercise. Bast owns a farm on which he aises mules. Yesterday two calves strayed into the mule lot and Bast tried to coax them out. They declined to be coaxed. Bast decided to risk the mules and went into the lot after the calves. The mules, by a flank movement, intercepted him at the haystack. While one stood guard the other mule went to the opposite side of the stack. Then No. 1 taking careful aim, kicked Bast. He described a graceful parabola over the stack and alighted very convenient to No 2. The latter, anxious to emulate his companion’s high average, calculated Bast into No. I’s field of ield of action. No. 1, perhaps over anxious to score again, or afraid Bast would manage to escape, fired quickly at short range, with the result that Bast fell short from the destined aim. He lighted on the top of the stack and clung there, feebling crying for help, until the mules were Iriven away. We are now located in our new quarters over Cauffman’s dry goods dore, first door east of Bank. The affice of the Journal will be open every week-day evening excepting vhen notice to the contrary is given on Journal bulletin board at bottom of stairway leading to office.
