LETTER FROMAJ.. CORNELIUS Detroit, Michigan, Oct. 18th., 1910. Friend Connolly;— Having resided in Indiana all my life prior to locating in Detroit, I believe I can state with positive assurance that few people in the Hoosier state realize how fundamentally the laws of Michigan differ from those of Indiana. The following comment thereon may be of interest to your readers. I may preface my remarks on this subject by stating that in some respects the laws of Michigan are a century behind the times, in other respects they are well in accord with the most advanced legislation of any of the states. One of the most striking differences between the, laws of the two states is to be found in the uniformity with which the various laws are applied in the two states. In Indiana all laws must operate generally oyer the entire state, any act of the General Assembly which does not do so is unconstitutional in Indiana. In Michigan we find the contrary practice to prevail. The legislature m Michigan may pass a game law for one county and a different one for another, you may fish in one part of the state at one season of the year andyomnay not fish in another county at the same time, so if any of your readers come to Michigan to hunt I should advise them to investigate the game law applying to the county in which they expect to stop. Other salient difference between the laws of those states are; In Michigan a married women may convey her real estate without her husband joining in the deed, in Indiana he must join. In Indjana at the death of the husband the wife takes one third of his real estate in fee simple, in Michigan the widow takes the title to nqpe of the real estate, only a life estate in one third. In Michigan a wife must join in a chattel mortgage executed by the husband, or same will be void, in Indiana this is not required. In Indiana the resident householder is entitled to an exemption of S6OO, and nothing more, in Michigan the the exemption is 40 acres of land, or a residence up to a valuation of $1500.00 two head of horses, certain provisions and other personal property, and so I might continue infinatum to cite examples of the striking difference between the laws of the two states. In the matter of pleading in the various courts the divergence is even much greater but as this subject is technical in its character and therefore might not be of interest to the average reader I shall not discuss it. Detroit is quite a metropolis having by the 1910 government census over 465,000, inhabitants, but these figures do not begin to cover the real population of Detroit as a business center, there are a number of suburban cities which are built up solidly with Detroit but which are not included within the city limits such as highland park, Wyndotte, and Ecorse and many others some of these places have fifteen or twenty thousand inhabitants and were they to be included the population of this business community would not be far from 600,000. Very few people have any adequate idea of the automobile industry in this city. There are more than 20 factories here among some of the larger ones are the E. M. F. employing 12,500 men, the Packard employing 7,5000 the Ford employing over 5000, the Cadillac more than 5000, and many others. I saw a statement recently that the value of the automobiles manufactured in Detroit aggregated over $15,000,000 for the year 1909, as a matter of fact the product of the Cadillac factory alone was for that period more than twenty two million and three other factories ran over the twenty million mark, for their product. From a professional standpoint I am glad to report that I am very well satisfied. Next month I shall form a partnership with two well known attorneys which will be a considerable boost for me. With best regards to my friends who are numbered among your readers, I am Very truly yours A. L. Cornelius.
Co-Operate With the Teachers. Now that the schools have begun their sessions, we must not forget that our children are still our children and the more the interest we show in their school the more its efficiency is increased. There is no teacher worthy the name who is not pleased with the judicious advice, assistance and sympathy of the parents. The gulf, at present, is two wide between the home and the school and the more we help to bridge it over the more we are improving not only our own children but the general tone of the school If the children see that the parents appreciate their teacher, they are much more apt to appreciate her themselves, lend cheerful and wiling obedience to her wishes and have a certain pride in the success of the school—Wolf Lake Trolley. Second Crop of Strawberries. This has been an unusual fall for beautiful, moderate, and growing weather. Monday some perfectly ripe and matured strawberries of the second crop this year were brought to the Journal office from the garden of W. H. Ward. A. A. Rasor will harvest the seoend crop of potatoes from a piece of ground he has near his house. Farming and fruit raising certainly is very profitable when two crops can be gathered in one season and almost removes from us the desire of going south.
Will Postpone Building. Some time ago it was decided by the members of the M. E. Church to remodel and build to the church this year, but owing to the lateness of the season the building will be postponed until early spring. However there will be a large new furnace installed now for use this winter. Excavating is being done so as to locate the new furnace according to the plans for the church when it is enlarged. Ed G.
