[Continued from page i.J want e drink,’ I argued, ‘you"might have spent some of it that way. The trouble with you ministers is that you don’t know how bad some poor fellows need a drink because you never get close enough to the hard-luck people to find out their troubles. There are times when a drink has saved a man from death.’ u ‘Now, Mr. Sullivan.’ he went on, j ‘don’t make the mistake of thinking I that I don’t know anything about the world and the things to which I you refer. I’ve been pretty close to them in more countries £han one, and I’m here to ask you to do something for the growing boys by setting a good example. Those ore the people we want to start in the Aght channels. By showing them the proper way to live you can do ( as much’ for saving these young men as I can.’ - z “He didn’t scare little bit at my roar, and came back every time with just as good as I gave him. He was a good fighter, and in a few minutes I began to look on him with admiration. He was the first fellow I ever saw that I couldn’t bluff. I told him to sit down and that we would talk it overat length. H We sat there and talked for an hour and he soon got it through my head that I was wrong and that he was right. Still, I had had so much of that kind of advice offered me that I did not heed it. k He certainly made a great try and he went a long distancfe out of his way to force something upon me that I needed. If I had taken the advice that he gave me I would have been worth several hundred thousand dollars to-day. “When I read of Sankey’s death in the papers I couldn’t help but think of his meeting with me and how hard he tried to make me .do right. I have often wondered what he would say of me since I have cut out the red stuff and tried to live as he told me. He will get a lot of credit in the Hereafter for what he did. He did not fear to face me in a small room with bare knuckles when I had a ‘rep’ for swinging hard ones on anything that bumped me. He sat there and bumped me with both hands for all that he had in him. More than that, he made me like Mr. Sankey was a good, game man. When you boys run across a man like that you want to sit up and take notice. He knows more in a minute than you do in a „ yearListen to him and you’ll be better off.” o X Why People Don’t Go To Church. [lndiana partner.] I have been reading with interest the articles in the Farmer bn Why the people fail, in day of graft, to attend church, and why the church has lost its influence over the world, as it has. All of these articles were good an to the point. I have been a member of church for 45 years and a close observer. In your last issue J. H. Haynes has spoken my thoughts and observations completely. His letter on the subject of graft is correct. z A few years ago Governor Hanly made a speech to the Chicago students, and among other things said that the people of the United States had gone money mad. The idea was to get money, no difference how you get it, and that this desire, among the people was worse than war, showing that each one is trying to swindle the other, and we are all more or less working along that line. No wonder the church has lost its influence; to be 1 that ministers and laymen wanted people to join church for the good there is in it; now it is for the money as well. / Though we have thus spoken we all know that the cost of living now is greater than in years past, and , the churches should not let the minister and his family suffer Cor food and raiment, otherwise they are unworthy of a minister. The thing we ought to consider is where is our treasure. The Good Book ‘ tells us that where our treasure is there is our heart also. We learn more and more the true saying of the good book that the love of money is the root of all evil. Let
professing people get out of his rut if they want to see the church have the influence it should have. Fargo, Ind. Jesse A. Wells. Enterta'ns a Blue Racer, The Kendallville News tells of a startling incident which occured a fevTdays ago at the home of Frank ptrater near Kendallville. Misses {Arie and Ayce, daughters of Mr. I Strater, were singing and playing the piano in the parlor of their home to an audience all unknown to them. After some time spent that way one of the girls walked overto a corner of the room to get a book and discovered a big blue racer snake nearly foAir feet long. The young ladies were very I much frightened and by their/ cries soon alarmed the other members of the family who rushed in and killed the reptile. The family is unable to determine just how the snake got into the home unless it was* through the cellar drain. ’ . Matrimonial Agency. Miss Pearl Hockert, who has been employed in this office for twd years, tendered her resignation, the same taking effect last Saturday night. Her sister, Miss Lou, succeeds her at the case. All the girls we have, employed so far have got married and are doing well and the people are beginning to look on this office aF^iofamatrimonalagency. Lob, however?positively avers that she is going to be immune from the string of ? the matrimonial bug. We’ll see. Time will tell.—Millersburg Grit. In Syracuse, the telephone exchange seems to be a good matrimonial agency with the Shakespeare club a good second, although neither have done as well as* the Millersburg Grit, i. e. married off one. The Shakespeare club is able to have one or so taken off their hands each year but every four years seems to be the time when the most names are changed. This is the agency which the Editor of the Journal employed and without its assistance, he would now probably be without an assistant Editress. Cable Reunion, On Wednesday of last week at Island ParL Elkhart, was held a reunion of the Cable family at which one hundred and fifteen descendants of Cornelius Cable were present.
