To the south of Lake Wawasee a new lake is being formed in a basin that has heretofore contained six small lakes. A substantial dam has been built and it is expected to raise the water seven feet, and .flood the entire basin, forming a lake several miles in" extent. The lake will will contain four larg# islands and have about seven miles of wooded shore line. The new lake will be known as Lake Papakeechie after an Indiana warrior, who for many years lived in that region. The editors visited this resort Friday. —- 0 A. Ploas.ant Surprise. The friends of Miss Carrie Strieby gave her a pleasant surprise and a handkerchief shower, Friday evening July 22, at the home of Pearl Kitson, being the date of her 11th birthday. Those who took part in the surprise were Claudia Snyder, Helen Hoy, Lillie Deardorff, Georgia Myers, Wilma Kitson, Emma Strieby, Cecil Howard, Fern McElroy, Olga Beckman, Ida Carlson, Helen Hendrickson, Ada Hinderer, Ruth Snyder, Mabelle Strieby and Mrs. Jessie Zerbe. The evening was spent in games and contests and music furnished by Olga Beckman and Mrs. Zerbe. Miss Carrie was the recipent of twenty-two handkerchiefs. Light refreshments were served and the guests departed feeling that they had spent a very pleasant evening. — o Watch For Bogus $lO Bills. The banks of the state have been notified by the government that there was in circulation a new counterfeit ten-dollar gold certicate of the series of 1901. While the counterfeit is declared a poor one and not particularly dangerous, it appears that in other sections of the country a number of them have been passed. The bill is a photograph reproduction on bond paper with the color applied with a brush. The silk fiber of the original is imitated by red and blue ink marks. Would Establish Game Preserve. Game Warden George W. Miles has written Elkhart county parties if they will set apart apiece of timber he will do all in his power to establish a game preserve. Arrangements’are being made to have a piece of timber set apart on the Neff farm north of Syracuse.—Milford Mail. • Horse Stung To Death. A horse belonging to Capt. A. M. Jones of Jones’ Landing, kicked over a hive of bees on Wednesday of last week, and was so badly stung by the infuriated honeymakers that it died on Thursday.
FREE EMPLOYMENT BUREAU, [Continued from page i.l since October 1, 1909, when it was set in regular running order. Had these persons sought employment through private agencies, they would have been required to deposit $2 each for registration fees, making a total of $3,000. Had they received work, as they received from free bureau, they would have been compelled to pay the private agency 10 per cent of the first month’s wages, or an average $5, according to statistics concerning the wages of persons provided with work by the free bureau. This would have meant an additional outlay of $10,500. -<? — How About Th's Man? A Mr. Bolan of Auburn, is said to be the only man in the state of Indiana who drives, an auto with one hand. He handles his machine well without the missing member. —Goshen Democrat. Mr. Bolan may be the only onehanded auto driver in Indiana, but we can boast of having the only handless auto driver in the state, that gentleman being Mr. Ira Gantz who resides near Vawter Park. Mr. Gantz, whose hands were taken off just above the wrists, not only runs his machine but has been repeatedly seen to procure the necessary tools from the machine’s tool box to make needed repairs then serefiely clamber under the mammoth touring car and attack its machinal parts with the same ease and the usual good results of a skilled garage machinist. This is not all of Mr. Gantz’s accomplishments. He is also a thorough horseman, and can harness hitch a team of horses as quickly as any one, and his management of fractious animals when in the harness is truly wonderful. o May Rebuild Vawter Park Hotel. It is rumored that Dr! W. R. McGarvoy, who sustained ja heavy financial loss through the destruction by fire of Vawter Park hotel some weeks ago, is trying to interest some parties of means in the building of a modem hotel on the old site. The site of the old hotel is one o of the most beautiful spots of ground on the shores of Lake Wawasee and the old hotel under Dr. McGarvey’s management had grown in favor as an ideal place to spend the summer months that those wishing to secure accommodations had to arrange far in advance for reservation of rooms. That the building of a modem hotel at Vawter park would be a a good investment is without questioning, and we hope that Dr. McGarvey is sucuessful in his efforts to build one. Will Give Vaudeville Show. Alive to the wants of its guests, the lake cottagers and the people In general in this community, the management of Wawasee Inn at no small outlay of money, have secured high class vaudeville artists of the American Music Hall Co., of Chicago, to give an afternoon and evening performance at the Wawasee Inn opera house on tomorrow (Friday,) July 29. The company engaged is said to bfe of the best in Chicago and the repertoir of vaudeville used is the same as produced at Chicago’s largest and most popular vaudeville theater. Gets Limb Crushed A man giving his name as Will Rothwell had his left leg badly crushed at the B. & 0. gravel pit at Leeland, last Thursday. He was riding a bumper and a sudden jerk of the train dislodged him with the result of his getting badly pinched. He was taken to the Hospitol at Garrett. ——— ——oThe old settlers of Noble county, are going to come together for a social day August 11th, at Albion.
