Stephen Russell, representing the Mishawaka Rubber Company in Pennsylvania territory, was here last Thursday visiting mother and friends. Jimmy recently took part in an oratorical contest as a representative of that school, coming off with honors. s ’ Virgil C. Bailey and family who have been living in Fort Wayne for nearly a year, have returned to Syracuse to visit at home. Virgil has been a motorman on the street car line, but it became too strenuous, working hours being too irregular. He has other work in view. The officers of the M. E. Read the better this week; there is something vhwe for us all to think about'. We are in receipt, of of the Cole Camp , (Mo.y Courier, which contains a half-tdne picture of tt»e band of that place. It has twenty-two members, five members of which are ladies. One of the ladies died On June 11. This band was organized in 1885. and one of the charter members was Wm. Beckman our furniture dealer. Last Saturday while Samuel Smoker, who live? near Elkhart Fraine, was walking behind a hayloader, he was caught in the abdomen by one of toe hooks and carried almost to the top of the machine before the team- was stopped. A Goshen physician who was promptly called, found Mr. Smoker in a serious condition, with a deep gash in his abdomen, but he revived in a few hours and will probably recover, Mrs. I. J. Leatherman and daughters, Mabel and Ureatb of Oneidtf, Ills., were guests of N, A. Steinmetz and wife and other friends here this week. They have been attending a family reunion at Wakarusa. Mr. Leatherman is a Methodist minister, and has been a coworker with Rev. Weaver of this place. The garage of Putt & Teagarden at Goshen bad a fire Saturday, that damaged die place about SISOO and burned upltbe S2BOO automobile of Mrs. HTC Whitmer. The machines, of Haines Egbert and A. B. Witt were also slightly damaged. Shortly after the fire started a carbide tank exploded and went out through the roof of the building. It was afterward found deeply imbedded m the' sand in the bottom of Rock Kun, i Mr. 1. P, Rummell, formerly of this place, his wife and youngest daughter, Eva, five years old\j»d a narrow escape from drowning in the river near Goshen last Sunday. In a boat with five others they started to cross the river above the dam. Midway of the stream the boat cauyht on a snag and was overturned in 18 feet of water. A boat at the opposite shore containing three men, hurried toihe assistance of the party, but in their attempts to resohe those in the water this boat was also up? set - There were then eleven persons, thres of them women and two children, struggjing together in the water, and the wonder is that .none of them was drowned. Other people on shore finally reached them, and though r the struggle lasted more than ten minutes, all were finally rescued, Mr. Rummell cannot swim but he and his wife saved themselves by grabbing a snag and holding to it until they were helped.

A horse belonging to N. J. Haycock became frightened at a barking dog and ran away Tuesday morning. Mta. W. H. Kingery of Warsaw, caught an eight pound bass while fishing at Tippecanoe lake one day this! week. Mrs. Chas. Fligor of Warsaw, slipped and fell on her back step Tuesday morning and broke her left arm. The Christian Church at Ligonier is free from debt and will celebrate by burning the mortgage, which has just been paid off. Mrs. Clayton Phillips and daughter Zelma, of South Bend, came Tuesday evening to spend the week with her relatives and friends. W. C. Jkckson and mother, formerly of this place but now of Chicago!, were in town Friday. Mr. Jackson is employed with Marshall Field & Co. The W, C. T. U. will serve sandwiches and coffee, with ice cream and cake in connection with the market on the Fourth in the old bank buildipg. r - The Pennsylvania railroad will run an excursion July 17 from Plymouth to Winona for the benefit of the Sunday Schools of that place, who will have a joint/pionic. Anyone caught tearing masks off or molesting persons taking part in the Fourth of July parade will be arrested and fined to the extent of the law. By order of committee. All persons coming to enter the fantastic parade have permission to dress at Locke’s blacksmith shop where the. participants will meet to start the parade at 1 o’clock sharp. Councilman James Wright of Kendallville, has never worn a pair of shoes since childhood, and has had his boots made by one firm, J. Sang & Sons, for forty three years. D. D. In some parts of the county wheat is being harvested while in others it is still green. The hay crop is the best for years. The Mexican government is in the throes of the first serious revolution in years. The trouble at present is confined to the northern states and the Texas boundary/is being guarded by United States troops, at the suggestion of Pres. Dias of Mexico. Golden Wedding. / On June 25, 1858, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. MoClintid were united in marriage, and their fiftieth anniversary was celebrated last Thursday. There were a number of invited guests among whom were Mrs. John Hamman, Mrs. Henry Kolberg, Allen Ruple and wife, Jess Shook and family, besides Eston McClintic and family, Charles McClintic, EJ McClintic and family apd Jasper McClintic and ether members of the famiTy. Lonnie Searfoss and Knox Stetler were delivering groceries in thnorth part of town Monday morning, and had an accident that caused considerable damage to the delivery wagon, but do one was hurt. They did not notice the guy wire stretched partially across the side street off Huntington, and in driving by, the top of the wagon caught and before the horses could be stopped the wagon over-turned, groceries, oil and bejys went out in a heap.
