WALKER it FANCIL, Printersand Publishers Entered as second-class matter May 4, r igoS, at the post office at Syracuse, • Indiana, under the Act of Congress 0/ Ma rch 3, 1879. FOR TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE. I hereby announce my candidacy for Township Trustee, subject to the decisiofi of the Democratic caucus of Turkey Creek Township. HENRY SHOCK REPUBLirar -- ■ COM One of the largest conventions of Kosoiusko oounty republicans ever held was that which assembled at Winona Lake on Tuesday forenoon to select a oounty ticket. The Convention, apportionment was based upon the Vote of tour years ago and consisted of f,131 delegates. Every preoinct was fully represented at the opening session, and many visitors from all over the oounty were presTbe convention was called to order by the County Chairman, Perry Smith, who called for the report of
the committee on rales and organization, which was read and adopted. The resolutions adopted by the convention endorsed the administration of Koosevelt, Hanly, and the whole republican administration. . Auditor of State Billheimer made a brief address' complimenting the republican party of the county and implored them to make as good a showing this fall as they did at the convention. Attorney-General Jas. Bingham warmed-up to the occasion, and said that it was usually found that the will of the majority was the best to follow, and urged that all support the entire ticket. Jesse E. Esohbaoh was renominated for representative, by acclamation. J The candidates for judge were L. E- Royse and M. H. Sammy. The vote by precinot went on until Mr. Summy saw the uselessness of continuing, and then withdrew, making a motion to make Mr. Royse the choioe of the convention. * Edmond Lash of Harrison township was ohosen by acclamation for commissioner of the middle district. There were four candidates for the southern district and the third ballott was required to select. Clymer withdrew and Rantz was nominated. H. V. Lehman won over A. L. Cornelius on the first ballot by 645 to 479. L: • James Baboook was chosen by acclamation for county treasurer. There were five candidates for sheriff and after two ballots Mabie was nominated. Cory received the solid support of Turkey Creek township, but Mabie was too strong in the south end of the county. Chas. A Kelly was nominated for coroner over A. N. Cary on the first ballot by 753 to 338. Geo. MoKpll was nominated for surveyor by acclamation. Charley Miller aud John Moorman were on the ground putting themselves right with the delegates. It is much apparent that Mr. Miller tiffs lost some favor in this part of the district, and his chances for nomination are very much in doubt, DEMOCRATIC __CONVENTION The demooratio oounty convention will be held in the opera house at Warsaw on Tuesday, June 16. Turkey Creek township will have some sixty-votes. The preoinct chairmen desire that all who can do so go to the convention, and the vote will be oast by all democrats of the township there present. There are .no contests for the nominations, It is probable that the present county officers, elected two years ago, will be endorsed for re-eleotion, and that popular Ed. Bowser will ba nominated by acclamation for Judge. A Serious Matter. The thousands of carp which are being found dead on the shores of Noble county lakes have committed suicide by their own burrowing methods of living. Investigation of the carcasses of the dead fish discloses that they are lined inside with a coat of hard cement, and it is presumed that this is obtained from the marl beds into which the carp have been burrowing. Marl is a thin white mud containing a large proportion of lime, some'HpiCß 40 to 50 percent, and from it cement is made. The carp with their natural burrowing tendencies h£ve gotten into these beds and the which forms after their swallowing the marl is what is affecting their deaths. —Nappanee Advance. Beg pardon; but when we construct another joke we’ll label it ae such, ‘ If you want to help make this Fourth of July in Syracuse a jolly one, contribute freely of your means when solioited. The sources of < revenue for the promoters on this occasion will be an absolute minimum, as all they intended doing is to make the day a memorable one. All who wish to help should make , the fact known to A. L. Cornelius at once, so that he can ascertain just 1 how far he can proceed in gettiiig amusements, fireworks, eto. < Patroniz- your home drillers for what you want that you can get, and then , they can get you What.you want that you J can not get. 1
j LEESBURG Notwithstanding the discouraging appearance of the weather in the early morning of Memorial Day, later on the sun came out bright and beautiful. Soon the business part of; town was fairly covered with the waving folds of Old Glory and the people began to flock into town from every direction to help honor the memory of the boys in iSue, who are resting i i their silent graves in the beautiful Cemetuy at Leesburg. The line was formed on Vanßuren St. by the Marshal, S. N. Garrett, at 9:30 in the following order:'Leesburg band, citizens, wreath bearers, firing squad and old soldiers. They marched to the M. E. Church where the G. A. R. services led by J. E. Stephenson as Gommander were observed followed by an excellent address by Comrade Capt. A. G. Wood, The line was then re-formed and marched to the cemetery for the closing services. The firing squad, Composed of eight young men chosen from the Pentalpha Club, made a good appearance in the line and performed their duties at the cemetery in fine style. As we them marching we could not help thinking of the boys of about their age and appearance who marched away 47 years ago to defend their country’s honor with their lives, notably W. H.
