NEW SHORT STORIES Mike’s Plan to Economize. Senator Gallinger of New Hampshire is the prily member of the senate who is a physician, and therefore he der lights in anecdotes relating to doctors. In the senate restaurant he convulsed a number of his colleagues by telling them of the efforts of an Irishman he knew who had been advised to .consult an eminent New York specialist. The Irishman had lived in New England many years, and he had learned Yankee thrift. He demurred at going to the specialist on account of the large fee he probably would have to pay. Finally, however, he consented. After reaching the specialist’s office | the Irishman's fears got the better of him again, and he decided to_ make a few Inquiries to learn, if he could, what his visit would cost him. The waiting room was crowded, and Michael i sat down beside a well dressed man who appeared to be waiting his turn.. “Foine docther, I take it?” tie remarked inquiringly. “A I very eminent specialist. The greatest authority in his. line, I think;” replied the other. After asking a number of other questions Michael - ventured to ’I / — = ! The stranger said that the specialist usually diagnosed the patient’s case on the first 'visit and charged probably §250, and after that the patient was charged about $lO a visit.-' Just at that moment the door opened ifito the specialist’s private office, and Michael bounded over without waiting his turn. With, outstretched hand he greeted the physician: |-“Well, here Oi am again, docther.”— 1 New York Times. Senator Probably Had a Cold. Senator Lodge was riding up in one of the exclusive senate elevators the other day. Now, there are no elevators in all the world like the senate variety. They are the.edition de luxe o£ all “lifts,” and nobody but a senator may ride in one of them except at such odd times as a mere citizen may; sneak a ride when, no dignified statesman is looking. In oilier words, if a senator is using one of the elevators at the north’ end of the capitof no ordinary mortal may ride therein. ; But on this occasion while Senator Lodge was •being carried upstairs an outsider who j happened to be an acquaintance of the senator got aboard. He was smoking a large cigar. Senator Lodge sniffed. “One of Crane’s qjgars?” he remarked insinuatingly. “He buys for 2 I cents a thousand.” “No,” replied the senator’s fellow . passenger, “I just got this from your private secretary down in your committee room.”—Boston Herald. \ Crabbed Age. Xt the dinner that‘the Chicago Press gave not long ago in Edward Payson Weston’s honor the veteran pedestrian said of old age: 4 , ’ “Age is no crime, but you would think so from the way some people try to . conceal it. We can give the lie to a mdn'.beiijp gay, vigorous, .buoyant, and it is foolish of us to resent our burdens of years in any other manner. “The-aged Beu Davies of St. Joseph resented his years in I a foolish, crusty, surly* way. “ ‘Hello, old man Davies,’ an elderly St. Joseph lawyer said to him one •momifii'. ■ ‘“C?d'' Davies snarled. ‘Old, hey? Well,;*how. about yourself? I’m no older than .you are. What’s your earliest recollection?’ t - “The lawyer gril led old man Davies and replied: . , “ ‘VFell, let me see. Yes, I think that’s it. My ; earliest recollection is hearing folks say, “There goes old man Davies.” I ” An Overvaiinted Virtue. 8., I. Kimball, (he general superintendent ■ the-life saviing service,‘said the other day of an applicant for a certain post:, Y* “The man was recommended for his Steadiness. Now. steadiness is a virtue, especially in life saving, that goes none too far. Whenever I think of it. 1 think of an old Iqdy I used to know. i “‘Mrs. Madden,’ a gentleman once said to this old lady, ‘your neighbor, Herbert Bisbing, has applied-to me for work. Is he steady ?’ “Mrs. Madden threw up her hands. “ ‘Steady, is it? she said. ‘Sure, If he was any steadier he'd be dead.’*
