—Owing to lack of space, we are compelled to leave out much editorial matter, and cut down our correspondence considerable this week. —Parties from Ligonier are talking of opening up a merchant tailoring and clothing store in town in the rooms lately vacated by J. S. Wynant —Bill Bowld has erected a back stairway to the upper story of his building on Main street It was by that stairway that that unfortunate turkey disappeared. —The Kelley House, Dr. D. C. Kelley, proprietor, is one of the new institutions of Syracuse. The Dr. put out a new and artistically painted sign on Friday. —Milton Woods has moved into the house lately occupied by A. B. Bell, of which lie became the jxwsessor in disposing of the I,ake House to the latter gentleman. —John Egbert, ex-sheriff of Elkhart county, a gentleman well known for his excessive piety, was in town one day last week. He called on several of the “ brethren " while here. —We are adding new names to our subscription list daily. We trust that all of our old patrous will see proper to renew. Roll in.the names, and the 82 worth of the “ rag baby.” —There are hundreds of people in this vicinity w hose names we should have on our subscription books. Let them, like enterprising grangers, give us their names for volume second. -—Sam Alvord, editor of the Albion Era. was in town Tuesday night, and a portion of the day yesterday. Before Sam ventured out, he had his “plug" overhauled and cleaned up. —Since his location among us. Rev. W: P. Small, pastor of the church of God, is winning golden opinions from our people. He seems to be a quiet, unobtrusive, Christian gentleman. —We are sorry to learn of the declining health of Mrs. Rippey, w ife of Hon. Matthew Rippey, Elkhart county, and mother of Joseph Rippey, of this vicinity. She is an estimable lady. -The Goshen says: “ Our old friend, John G. Kay, has opened a grocery and provision store at Ithaca, Darke county, Ohio. We trust that tbe final winter arrangements have lieen made, and that the time as now fixed will remain unchanged. —We think that the organization of j a building, loan anti savings association i in town would be a profitable undertaking. It would stimulate men tosave their hard earnings and place it where a good interest could be realized fjram it in time. . -i-Onr citizens who have unfinished buildings on their hands have been having a very’ interesting time for the last few days and nights keeping up fires to 1 prevent the plastering from freezing. !Ask Hugh Callander; he knows "how it ta himself." —Our citizens could not do better than to unite their energies and form a joint stock company, for the purpose ‘of establishing a manufactory of some description at this place. By doing so. they would show that the citizens of the place had faith in tbe future prosperity of Syracuse. /—Thanksgiving was properly observed in Syracuse. It is surmised, however. that the unregenerate “cuss" who stole Bill Bowld’s turkey, did not wait until Thanksgiving to devour it In consequence of such theft “ Uncle Ad " was deprived tbe pleasure of participating in aifanticipated feast —We unintentionally neglected last week to call the attention of our readers to the new advertisement of Browder & Manville, which appeared in that issue. These gentlemen have opened up a first-class grocery store in Wayer’s brick where they will be found at all times ready to wait on their customers. Give them a calk —The mill property of Prickett Bros. A Co, on the Elkhart river, a short distance below Beaton, Elkhart county, is offered for sale on reasonable tonus. —Our popular deputy sheriff, N. M. Watkins, was in town on Wednesday ■ afternoon, of last week. He was full of business, having the entire work of , the sheriff’s office on his hands during ' the abeenee of sheriff Jaques in Ohio, i —As will be seen by a reference to our advertising columns, the splendid . farm of Geo. Crocker, better known f here as the “Skinner farm,** is offered r for sale in a body, or in parcels, to suit . purchaser. This is a good opportunity for some une to purchase valuable property. —At the meeting of the Philomatliian t Society on Friday evening, John W. i Stetler was elected president, George Miles, vice president, Thos. A. Starr, ' secretary, and Prof. F. McAlpine treas- , urer. The society is now in good running order, and we are glad to see that considerable interest is manifested in its success. Another regular meeting will be held to-morrow evening. —Many of our citizens will be pleased to learn of the whereabouts of a former citizen and tonsorial artist of 1 this place. We refer to the lamented Abbott. We have received from him a copy of thfe London Free Frets, published at London, Province of Ontario, ' Canada West lie requests us to send him a copy of The Enterprise, and asks us to give his respects to the “boys." —We are pleased to learn, as we do from the Elkhart Review, that our esteemed friend, Theodore F. Garvin, late deputy auditor of Elkhart county, has been appointed freight clerk and acting station agent of the L. S. & M. S. railroad at Goshen, with fair prosl»ects of being appointed station agent. The railroad company have thus secured the services of an efficient and competent employe. —At the incorporation meeting on Monday evening a committee was appointed to locate the boundaries of the proposed corporation. The committee will meet for that purpose on to-mor-row afternoon, at the hall. The following named persons compose said committee: J. A. Kindig. G. M. Ray, J. P. Prickett, J. S. Wynant, A. That town has grown wonderfully since it has secured a newspar per.” And also—“ The Enterprise announces its second volume in six weeks more. It is an excellent paper, and is to be conducted on the cash in advance plan." Thanks for the above complimentary notice, but ifi regard to that “cash in advance plan" we can’t quite come to it just now. Wish we_ could. — It is evident that the credit business will soon be a relic of the past Merchants and business men everywhere are fast coming to a cash basis as the only safe system, and when every on? comes to the same system, all will be satisfied with it. It will hot do for those who employ labor to refuse cash payment when due. and yet expect the laborer to pay cash for his purchases. Let every one. merchant farmer, manufacturer, mechanic and day laborer adopt the cash system in all their t ransactions, and every thing will move off smoothly. ~ - ...... —Weave always glad to see any of the enterprises of our town prosper, and we were highly pleased, upon dropping into the harness shop of Ray & Cullers the other day to see this firm doing such an exceedingly good business. All hands were busy as bees, while the sale room was crowded with work which we think would be hard to bea£- Their stock is of the best, and will be sold at granger prices. They have the best stock of whips ever brought to Syracuse, and when you want to Whip your horse, your wife, ! or the editor, buy of them.
