Gifts of Christmas extended beyond day
I By REV. DAVID L. HYNDMAN Traditionally for the church, Christmas is not just a day, but a season —a 12-day season from Christmas Day to The Feast of the Epiphany when, as tradition dictates, the Maji, or wise men, arrived to worship the infant Jesus at Bethlehem. We are all familiar with the song, ‘'‘The 12 Days of Christmas” in which a blessed recipient receives from her “true love” on successive days 12 rather inappropriate and largely useless gifts. God’s gift to the world on that first Christmas must have seemed equally inappropriate and useless. A helpless child to a suffering and sinful people was hardly recognized as a gift of any value, except of course to the faithful: Mary, his mother; Joseph, his protector; the rag tag shepherds and the searching Magi. But we, who live on the other side of the Messianic event that was Jesus, know the value of the gift. One day seems hardly enough to celebrate the value of that gift, nor of course are 12 days. But the season is a recognition of the treasure trove of blessings we receive from the incarnation of the Son of God. The consummation of our joy, then, should not be limited to just one day, but should effect all the days of our lives. The season urges us not to curtail our merri-

DAVID L. HYNDMAN ment and festivities, but to prolong our thankful celebration of the most appropriate and useful gift any of us will ever receive — our salvation born in the Christ Child. I fear, however, that few of us celebrate the Christmas season in that manner. So much of our joy is in anticipation on Christmas Day itself, as if it were an ending rather than a beginning. Before Christmas our joyful energies are expended in decorating the house, putting up the tree, baking those delicious Christmas delicacies. So that when the day is over we are spent, and we are afflicted with the post-Christmas Day blahs. Then, the cleaning of the house.
the taking down of the decorations, the dismantling of the tree — all seem more of a chore than a joy. Good will gives way to grumpiness; peace gives way to argument; and that era of good feeling gives way to business as usual. The joy of Christmas does not end because we’ve taken it down and packed it away for yeU another year. Our own spiritual!ty, concerning Christmas joy, demands that we give a gift each day in the season of our lives. Even though we might think
Bishop says, ‘Pray for peace’
Bishop John M. D’Arcy has asked for special prayers of all people during the Christmas season, the season of peace. According to the bishop, “Prayer is the main fact that has brought about a time of peace and hope in Eastern Europe and, indeed, in Russia itself. As we stand now on the edge of another great military conflict, it is my hope that people of all faiths will turn to God and beg for the end of this time of conflict. Let us pray for the institution of dialogue, instead of violence,” he said. The bishop requested the following letter be read at all Catholic churches in the diocese on Dec. 23, the fourth Sunday of Advent: My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It is astonishing that Christmas never fails to weave its spell and touch our hearts. Why is this? It is because for those, who are able to see, this night has meant the lifting of darkness. Because of Christ, the darkness of sin can never overcome the world. The world is not condemned, but it is saved, for the world has become the dwelling place of God. He has pitched His tent among us; and wonder of wonders, this mystery, which our tradition has called the Incarnation, means that you and I, in cooperation with grace, can expand and deepen the presence of God in the world. We are instruments of God’s light, especially in our own families. My hope and prayer for each one of us this Christmas time is that, on our knees at Mass and in our visits to the Christmas crib, we will say to Jesus Christ our Savior those two marvelous words: I believe. The ultimate Christmas gift is faith. What parents give most to their children, what the preacher nourishes by the Word of God. what we bring to the crib, the only thing we carry at the moment

that gift inappropriate or useless, the gift that Christ challenges us to give is the gift of ourselves to others. That is far more valuable than anything we have packaged or wrapped; and because it is the only human gift that has any lasting value, it is never inappropriate or useless. You see, “true love” in the old song had exactly the right idea: He continued to give tokens of his love to his beloved. The angles who announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds
of our death is our faith that God has indeed become one of us. He, the living Son of God, is our Brother and our Savior. He has come to save and so we rejoice with the shepherds and with Mary and Joseph. This Christmas, like so many in the past, a cloud hangs over us in a place not far from Bethlehem. A million men and women are poised, ready for combat. I wish to say at this moment that I believe, with all my heart, that prayer is the most effective means of preventing the outbreak of conflict, which will kill tens of thousands of people, including in-
Calvary hosts Bashor kids
Last Sunday night Christmas came early for 14 youth of the Bashor Home in Goshen. Joining with the people of Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse, local people gathered to make this holiday season especially significant for the young people from the Home. > Either from a home where the family had refused to have the boy or girl come back for the holidays, or from a home not safe for them to return, these young people are staying at the Goshen home for the holidays. Adopted for the evening by a family or organization of the church, the youth — from age 11 to 17 — were asked to make a wish list, and Calvary people worked to make it a great evening for each youth there Starting with a Christmas buffet filled with turkey and dressing, plus Christmas specialties from every home, the evening was aimed at making this a Christmas to remember Aided by the Gr?en Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, who sent mementos to some of their young Indiana

May I ask that there be special prayers at all Masses on Dec. 23, on Christmas Day, on Jan. 1, which is dedicated on our liturgical calendar to peace, and on two other great feasts of this season, Dec. 30, The Feast of the Holy Family, and Jan. 6, The Feast of the Epiphany. Above all, ask your children to pray for peace on this season of the Prince of Peace. X Witji every best wish and prayer, I remain Sincerely yours in the Lord, Most Reverend John M. D'Arcy
