Swim squad splashes past Central in thriller

By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer

Last-minute drama, the final event of the evening to decide the winner. That was the case on Monday evening as the Wawasee boys’ swim team and the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers found themselves dead even at 86-86 after 11 events of a nonconference dual meet in the Warrior Pool. With the 400-yard freestyle relay race being the last opportunity for either the Warriors or the Blue Blazers to secure a victory in what had been a close,

MAKING A SPLASH — Todd Miller, a senior member of the Wawasee boys’ swim squad, makes his way towards the finish line during the 100-yard butterfly race in the Warrior Ppol Monday. Miller, who placed second in the event, helped the Warriors come from behind to post a 96-90 victory over Elkhart Central. Wawasee (3-1) will host Northridge at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup. (Photo by Scott Davidson)

see-saw affair, the Warriors nailed down a big 96-90 win with a first and third place effort in the race. After Shon Davis, Thad Dußois and Eric Schaekel gave the Warriors a nice lead in the 400 freestyle relay, freshman Andy Kryder finished off the Blue Blazers by nailing down the win with the final leg of the race and the Warriors began to celebrate. “I’m extremely pleased with our performance and this was definitely what you call a tqtal team effort,” said an elated Coach Roger Karns after watching the Warriors improve to 3-1 on the season.

and Davis again led the way with the victory in the race. With the Warrior lead opened up to 81-75 after Aaron Dial won the 100 backstroke and Davis placed fourth and John Noble was fifth, Central rallied to tie the meet at 86-86 by taking first, second and fifth in the 100 breast stroke race. That set the stage for the heroics of the 400 freestyle relay foursome of Kryder, Schaekel, Davis and Dußois to win the meet for the Warriors. And win it they did, as the foursome’s first-place time of 3:31.49 easily bested the Central secondplace effort of 3:35.40. “We just swam very tough tonight and we had great swims and dives from a lot of people and that’s what we had to have,” commented Karns. “The shorter freestyle races were where we hurt them and after falling behind by losing the first race of the night (200 medley relay) we just had to battle back and make up points in all of the races,” he added. The Warriors won six of the 12 events on the evening, as Dußois (50 freestyle), Dial (100 backstroke), Kryder (100

freestyle) and Andy Dunithan (one-meter diving) won in individual events while, as mentioned above, the relay team of Kryder, Schaekel, Davis and Dußois won both the 200 freestyle relay as well as the deciding event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay race. “We needed to pick up points in the lower places in the meet and that’s what we did,” said Karns, noting that the Warriors only had four sixth place finishes while the Blue Blazers had eight. “This was a great win,” he emphasized, pointing out that Central was sectional champion last season and that they had already beaten Warsaw, a key conference foe of the Warriors, by about 20 points earlier this year. Taking second place efforts for the Warriors in the win were Kryder (200 IM), Schaekel (500 freestyle) and Todd Miller (100 butterfly) in individual events, as well as the team of Dial, Miller, Manning and Pete Dudchenko in the 200 medley relay race. Third place finishes for the Warriors were turned in by Schaekel (200 freestyle), Manning (50 freestyle), Dial (100 but-

rior grapplers won the first five matches of the meet and their lead was never seriously challenged for the remainder of the contest. Wawasee freshman Mike Atkins started things out with a pin of Vincent Valtazar at the 2:43 mark of their 103-pound match. Scott Wheat was a winner by forfeit at 112 pounds, and Chris Requejo won by technical fall in the 119-pound division. Brian Dutcher followed with a pin victory in the 125-pound class and Matt Stump was a 7-3 winner over Jason Martin at 130 pounds. “Our lower weight classes got the lead as they’ve always done and we held on,” said Wawasee Assistant Coach Jeff Welborn. The victory gave the Warriors a 2-1 record in the Northern Lakes Conference. Their only NLC defeat came on December 4 when they lost a 33-29 decision to Goshen after building a big lead in the lower weight classes. The Raiders weren’t able to bounce back from the early deficit, however. Dan Clevenger, Ryan Keiper and Tony Lund rounded out the Wawasee attack with victories in the 140-, 152- and heavyweight divisions, respectively. “This was a good victory for us,” Welborn said. “The team has responded well, coming back from losses.” Requejo ran his perfect season record to 10-0 with his victorious effort. Eight of those victories have come at 112-pounds while the other two were recorded in the 119-pound class. Dutcher improved to 10-1, with eight pins, and Atkins raised his mark to 9-2.

Rob Smith, Jay Haab and Matt Mast led the way for the Trojans, as each popped in 11 points in the defeat. The Milford seventh grade boys’ cage squad notched its first win of the season (1-3) after holding on for a 25-24 victory over Fairfield. Brandon Bucher led the Trojans with nine points and 10 rebounds while Troy Wuthrich scored eight points and Greg Replogle added six. Ryan Gingerich scored two points for the Trojans while Zach Stookey led the defensive effort and hauled down six rebounds. The Milford sixth grade “A” and “B” teams each improved to 1-3 on the season after posting victories over Ox Bow. The “A” team won, 34-24, as Chad McClintic and Jeremy Smith each scored nine points. Using a strong offensive start in the first-half and a 6-0 run in the last minute of the contest, the Wawasee boys’ freshman basketball squad fought off a pesky challenge at Bremen Monday in earning a 40-30 victory. The win was the fifth in a row without a loss for the frosh cagers this season. “We moved the ball well and got some good shots, which we were able to hit in the first half,” said Coach Chuck Evans, who watched his squad build a 26-13 halftime lead after outscoring the Lions 14-5 in the second quarter. The Warriors, who led 34-22 at the end of the third quarter, saw their lead shrink as the hosts battled back in the final period. “Bremen never gave up and we started missing some shots in the second half and they got right back into it,” said Evans. The Lions cut the Warrior lead to 34-30 by scoring the first eight points of the final quarter before Wawasee regrouped and connected for three baskets in the final minute of action to secure the 40-30 win. “We got some very good play from our perimeter and that was important because Bremen took away our post play with their defense on the inside. They played zone on defense the entire game and we had some trouble with it Since it was really the first time this season that we’ve seen much of it,” commented Evans. game, the Lions stayed close by connecting on 12-of-20 from the charity stripe. “Our defense concerned me because, although we had been playing well lately, we went back to our old ways and put them oh the line by not playing very good defense at all,” remarked Evans. Joey Salazar paced the Warriors with 14 points while teammate Kurt Beer connected for 10 and Kevin Pletcher added eight. Orlando Vallejo contributed four points to the win while Rich Matthew and Bryan Finlinson each added two markers. “We got good play from the players off the bench once again,” stated Evans. “Our bench has been coming in and contributing and playing their roles for the team this season.” Road Travels Continue After posting three of their five victories in action on the road thus far, the frosh squad will continue to travel with games at Central Noble and at West Noble in the next week. The Warriors will face Central Noble tomorrow (Thursday) before treking to Ligonier to challenge the West Noble Chargers next Monday. Tip-off for both games is set for 6:30 p.m. Wawasee will begin the 1991 portion of its schedule with a contest at Whitko on January 3 before participating in the Manchester Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 5 The squad will then play five of its final seven games of the regular season at home, beginning with a key conference showdown with Concord January 10.
