Lange reunited with sister after 10 years
Rose-Marie Lange of Syracuse received her Christmas present early this year. Her younger sister and brother-in-law, Marlis and Kurt Sohn, came from Germany to visit nearly two weeks ago. The siblings had seen each other only twice in the past 25 years. “Three weeks ago I heard they were going to come,” explained Rose-Marie. “It was a really, really big surprise. It was the best Christmas present I could wish for.” The sisters last saw each other 10 years ago. Rose-Marie remembered the bittersweet occasion. “My mother was dying. We knew that, and that’s why we met in Berlin. Otherwise, it would have been longer,” she said. “It seemed like too short,” said Marlis of their last reunion. “We were raising our families at the time,” added Rose-Marie, as an explanation of the brief visit. The siblings grew up in West Berlin where Rose-Marie met her husband, Gene Lange, who was working as a Brethren volunteer in the divided city. In June 1966 the couple married, and a month later they left the country for the bridegroom’s stateside home. Not long after, Rose-Marie’s sister walked down the aisle, marrying a young German, Kurt Sohn. The newlyweds then moved to South Africa where they lived for 20 years. Mother, father and two daughters, “we were the only ones, spread out between three continents,” explained Marlis, who spoke with an accent slightly thicker than her sister’s. “My parents never traveled in life, then they traveled to Africa and to the (United) States,” continued Rose-Marie. About a year ago, the Sohns relocated to Biberach, a small town in southern Germany, because Kurt was sent to a job site in Holland. Several weeks ago, near the project’s completion, he and Marlis decided where they would go on vacation.
Couple exchanges vows in New Jersey
Marjorie L. Forrest of Summit, N.J., and Herbert W. Riedel of Milford were united in marriage Saturday, Nov. 24, in Prospect Presbyterian Church, Maplewood, N.J. Rev. George A. She was attended by her sisters, Rosella F. Miller of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Mary F. VanAlsten of Redford, Mich. Her brother, William M. Forrest of Syracuse, N.Y., gave her in marriage. Granddaughters of the groom, Allison Kralovansky of Elkhart and Lisa Schneider of Zionsville were junior bridesmaids. Al Kralovansky of Elkhart was best man for his father-in-law. Ushers were James T. Forrest, Amesbury, Mass.; William R. VanAlsten, Long Beach, Calif.; and Dr. John VanAlsten, Wilmington, Del., all nephews of the bride. Following the ceremony, the couple received congratulations

In the meantime, the Langes have planned little for their guests. They’re playing it by ear, or better, using their ears. “We are just talking because we don’t see each other (often),” said Rose-Marie. “We just want to be together and to know each other. We just want to know who we are.... We don’t correspond that much.” The sisters communicate in their native tongue. “It kind of feels good to speak German again,” conceded Rose-Marie, adding that when she has trouble remembering German, she fills in the gaps with English. Even though the Sohns haven’t seen much of the Hoosier state, they like it so far. “We have been in church on Sunday,” said Marlis, marveling at the warm reception she and her husband received from members of Bethany Church of the Brethren, New Paris. “Everybody stepped forward and greeted us. It was a new experience,” she said, adding Europeans tend to be less welcoming to foreigners than their American cousins. The Langes hope to take their guests to Fort Wayne, Chicago and maybe even Indianapolis before they depart. Additionally, the group plans to visit the Langes’ eldest daughter at Manchester College. No doubt, the reunion will all end too soon; but the Sohns don’t plan on waiting another 25 years before they return. “We are looking forward for a second visit, for a longer visit, to see more of America,” said Kurt. “We would like to tour (the United States) in summer.” And it may be sooner than they think! Upon his return to Germany, Kurt will be sent to a different construction site, but as yet he doesn’t know where. “Maybe to America! ” he exclaimed. If so, Marlis and Rose-Marie could end up living in relatively close proximity for the first time in over two decades.
