Comeback bid falls short for Lady Warriors
I By MITCHELL STINSON Writer The Wawasee Lady Warriors fell to 1-4 on the basketball season after their bid for a come-from-behind victory fell short in a 48-40 home loss to Elkhart Central last Monday. Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Lady Warriors used a pressure defense to get back into the game in the fourth quarter. But Central’s Lady Blue Blazers regained their composure in the final minute of the contest and hung on for the victory. “We made two runs at them in that second half and I hope we grew from this game,” said Wawasee Coach Jim Hite. Senior guard Lisa Mikel led the comeback attempt, scoring seven of her game-high 17 points in a two-minute, 20-second span. She brought Wawasee to within 44-33 with two free throws at the 3:49 mark of the fourth quarter Central’s Shawanna Jackson responded with a driving basket to push the lead back to 46-33. But

Mikel made it 46-36 when she scored a fast-break bucket and was fouled in the process. She then hit a 12-foot corner jumper to make it 46-38, with 1:29 left in the game. The Lady Warriors came within 46-40 at the 1:08 mark when Paige Price pulled down an offensive rebound and hit a short bank shot. They had a chance to cut the deficit to four points in the game’s final minute before Central’s Steeter Pittman made a crucial steal with 55 seconds left in the game. Pittman was fouled in the process and calmly sank two free throws to clinch the victory for the Lady Blue Blazers. Elkhart Central Coach Jane Lutz said that her team was fortunate to hang on for the win. The Blazers dominated play for most of the game but lost their touch in the final quarter. “We weren’t shooting well and free throws have been a problem for us,” Lutz said. Lutz' squad built its big lead with good ball movement and aggressive inside play. Meanwhile, Wawasee’s set offense had trouble scoring against Central’s

Senior Lori Stiver and sophomore Carrie Schmahl were next with six points apiece. Paige Price and Lori Gargett led the team in rebounding with 10 each. The 3-2 Lady Blue Blazers were led by forward Delores Johnson, who scored 16 points. The Lady Warriors lost a 54-35 decision to the Concord Minutewomen at Concord last Thursday, Nov. 29. Mikel scored 11 points to lead Wawasee, while teammates Price, Stiver and April Bouse each chipped in with six points. Alma Burns scored a game-high 14 points for the winners. Swim squad, 2-1, places second in Goshen Relays
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer Going up against a talented field of teams, the Wawasee boys’ swim team turned in an impressive effort on Saturday to finish second in the seven-team competition at the annual Goshen Relays. "It was just a fine all-around performance by the entire team and we were really happy with the effort,” said Coach Roger Karns. A powerful Penn squad captured the top spot in the team standings, with a total of 124 points, while the Warriors grabbed second place honors with 112 points. “We knew that Penn was the team to beat going into the relays and we were happy that we beat the other teams from our conference,” commented Karns. Following Penn and Wawasee in the final team standings were Northern Lakes Conference members Concord (102), Warsaw (100), Goshen (54), Northridge (40) and North Wood (34). "Concord showed that they have a strong team, while Warsaw is also a good club that will be tough in the NLC,” the coach said. During the 10 relay events that were contested on Saturday, the Warriors captured three firsts The team of Andy Kryder, Shon Davis, Eric Schaekel and Thad deus Dußois combined to win the 400-yard freestyle relay. In the crescendo relay event, the foursome of Chris Ganshorn, Justin Banks, Cory Manning and Todd Miller took first. The combination of Davis, Banks, Aaron Dial and John Noble won the 200 backstroke relay.

Bill Gayton made it two in a row for the Redskins by beating Dan Clevenger, 12-8, in the 140-pound class. But the Warriors pushed their lead to 29-6 in the following match as Jeremy Brickey pinned Goshen’s Mark Underwood at 3:49 of their 145-pound contest That was the last time Wawasee would taste victory for the remainder of the night. Guard Yen Tran led Wawasee with a 10-point effort while teammates Crista Dippon and Kelly McClintick chipped in with nine points each. McClintick had a dominant performance on the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds from her center position. The game was marked by lots of fouling and poor free-throw shooting. The Lady Warriors hit just eight-of-20 shots from the charity stripe and Whitko was 11-25. “It was a sloppy game,” said Wawasee coach Neal Frantz. “I don’t feel like we played too well, but we played well enough to win.”
“I think that our depth showed up better for us on Saturday and we really had a lot of gutty efforts from the team in all of the events,” said Karns. In a very competitive race in the 350 freestyle relay event, the team of Schaekel, Dußois and Kryder took second for the Warriors. Also placing second for the squad was the foursome of Dial, Davis, Todd Miller and Cory Willard in the 200 butterfly relay race, as well as the team of Kryder, Dußois, Schaekel and Manning in the 200 freestyle relay event. the score 29-9. The Redskins needed to do more than just win the last four matches. To overcome the big deficit, they needed to get the six points that are awarded to wrestlers who pin their opponents. And that’s just what they got. Goshen’s heavier grapplers made short work of their Wawasee opponents, taking them to the mat quickly and efficiently. Scott Moon, Michael Smucker and Sean McCrindle brought the Redskins to within 29-27, with pins in the 160-, 171-, and 189-pound classes, respectively. Heavyweight Ryan Miller clinched the Goshen victory in the final match of the night when he pinned Warrior Tony Lund at 3:01 of their contest. The win gives the Redskins a 1-0 record in the Northern Lakes Conference and a 6-3 mark overall. Wawasee dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 6-4 overall. race while the Warrior team of Andy Dunithan and Josh Galloway finished sixth in the diving relay. Fresh off a fine effort on Saturday, the 2-1 Warriors now are preparing for their next challenge, a dual meet next Monday against a talented Elkhart Central squad. “I think we’re fairly evenly matched with Central and it should be a close, exciting meet. We’re hoping that a lot of people turn out to support us because Central is always a strong team and it should be a great meet for the fans,” said Kams. The meet starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Warrior Pool. Easily Defeat East Noble After a tough loss to a talented LaPorte squad 10 days earlier, the Warriors bounced back with an easy 131-46 victory at East Noble last Thursday. The nonconference win raised the Warriors’ record to 2-1 on the season. “We were happy with the effort against East Noble because we had the chance to move people around and swim them in some different events and it worked well,” remarked Karns. The Warriors took firsts in all 12 events, en route to the lopsided win over the Knights. In individual action, freshman Kryder returned to the lineup to capture two wins on the evening. Also winning for the squad in individual competition were: Dußois, Davis, Dial, Dunithan, Schaekel, Dudchenko and Noble. In relay team action, the foursome of Willard, Ganshorn, Noble and Dudchenko was victorious, as well as the team of Kryder, Manning, Schaekel and Dußois and the combination of Davis, Banks, Christoffel and Ganshorn.

Warriors to be tested by rival Tigers and Trojans
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer After posting a .500 mark (2-2) through the first two weeks of the 1990-91 season, the Wawasee Warriors will face another tough weekend of high school basketball action. On Friday, the 4-0 Warsaw Tigers will invade Warrior Gym for a key showdown between two long-time conference rivals. Wawasee is currently 0-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference, after a 77-46 loss to fourth-ranked Concord, while the Tigers won their initial conference game, 58-51, last Saturday at Goshen. Tip-off for the annual clash begins with the junior varsity game at 6:15 p.m. “Friday night is obviously a big game for us, with Warsaw being a conference, as well as a possible sectional, opponent for us,” commented Wawasee Coach Gary Goshert. “I don’t think we need any extra incentive. The word Warsaw is enough to get these kids ready to play ." Warsaw, despite losing all five of its starters from last season’s Triton Sectional championship squad, has picked up with a full head of steam heading into their showdown at Wawasee. The Tigers began the year with home wins over South Bend LaSalle (90-84 in overtime) and Columbia City (74-58) before recording wins at Huntington North (65-58) and Goshen (58-51) last weekend. “I’m concerned with our team on the defensive end of the floor right now — we have to try and progress in that area to become a better team,” commented Goshert. “Warsaw is a team that has great execution year in and year out, with (Tim) Taylor on the inside and (Dan) Elliott (providing) a concern with the 3-point shot," the coach added. After four games, 6-feet-4 junior Jason McKenzie is leading the Tigers, averaging almost 20 points-per-contest. Taylor, a 6-2 senior workhorse, is next in scoring at 15 ppg Elliott, a 6-3 junior, is averaging just over 14 points for the Tigers For the 2-2 Warriors, four players are averaging in double figures, with senior guard Jason Mickley leading the way with a 15.5 ppg average. Senior Dennis Garland, a 6-4 force on the inside as well as the outside, is averaging almost 14 points, while fellow senior Matt Haab, a 5-10 guard, is averaging 11 points. Sophomore Mike Ferverda has provided a key scoring punch off the bench, with just over 10 points per game. “We’re happy with the rotation of players that we have right now and we consider Mike a starter because he gives us such a lift and a spark with his play off the bench," said Goshert when asked if Ferverda may be in line for a starting assignment after he posted 16 points and 12 rebounds in the team's 95-57 destruction of DeKalb last Saturday. While the Tigers will likely go with McKenzie, Taylor, Elliott and seniors Todd Szymanski and Chad Scott as their starting five, the Warriors will counter with
Mickley, Haab, Garland and sophomores Jake Lambert and Kyle Newcomer. On The Road Saturday While the Warriors have been impressive in two easy wins over Fairfield and DeKalb on their homecourt, the road has not yielded the same kind of results for the squad. Goshert is hoping to change that 0-2 mark this week when the Warriors travel to Bourbon to face the Triton Trojans on Saturday. The JV game will begin action at 6:30 p m. . “We need to continue to work hard and improve on certain areas of the game in order to get to the point we want to be at later in the season,” Goshert said. The Trojans, coached by fifthyear mentor Doug Snyder, are 1-2 on the season going into a contest at Plymouth on Friday. Triton started the 1990-91 campaign with a high-flying 89-73 win over Bremen, before dropping a 91-68 decision to Tippecanoe Valley and a 78-50 contest to LaVille last weekend. Describing his squad as a team that likes to apply full-court pressure and try to get some easy baskets off their defense, Snyder says that the team has several areas to work on going into the matchup with the Warriors. “Right now we're having trouble with our free throw shooting, our rebounding and the fact that we’re committing too many fouls with our pressure defense,” the coach commented earlier this week. “Wawasee is a very good, wellcoached team and, after seeing them earlier this season, everything about them concerns me,” remarked Snyder. “I don’t see a lot of weaknesses with Wawasee because they have all the elements of a good team, with Garland on the inside and Mickley and Haab on the perimeter.” The Trojans, after suffering through a tough campaign last season with a young squad, are an experienced group this year, with all five starters back from a year ago and a total of eight returning lettermen on the squad. Although Snyder commented that there could be a “couple” of changes in the line-up for the Trojans after last weekend’s effort, the probable starters for the team include seniors Mike Mcßride (5-11), Keith Manuel (6-2), Chad Sarber (6-1), Jason Landis (5-10) and Shane Hargrave (6-0). “Triton likes to push the ball up the court on offense and then Shoot the 3-point shot, so we’ll have to make sure we get to their shooters," Goshert said, adding, “We re also going to have to handle their pressure defense and make sure we make good decisions with the ball and with our shot selection.” Gymnastics clinic at WHS Saturday A gymnastics clinic will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Wawasee High School from 9:30a.m. until3p.m. For more information call Tracy Sumpter at 457-5378.
