‘Turkey Trot’ run set to raise funds for local runner
Area running enthusiasts will have the opportunity on Saturday, Nov. 24, to not only work off a few of the excess calories picked up at the Thanksgiving table but also a chance to help send a fellow runner to China. The “Turkey Trot,” which will include a 5K run as well as a onemile race, is being held to raise funds for Wawasee sophomore Angie Garner. Garner, a member of the Wawasee girls’ cross country team, will be travelling to China next month to compete with a group of runners from across the state. The one-mile event is schedule to begin at 9:45 a m. at Wawasee High School, with the 5K set for a 10 a.m. start. The course for the races will be a flat one and an entry fee will be charged, with all proceeds going to help cover expenses for Garner’s trip to Shanghai. The trot will be divided into the following age categories for male participants: eight and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-45, 46-49, 50-59, and 60 and over. The women’s divisions will in-

Running game declines
Recently, Sports Illustrated ran a cover story lamenting the decline of the running game in the National Football League (NFL). The cover pictured former Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson with the headline, “Why can’t they run like O. J.?” The story inside offered a number of possible reasons for the decrease in rushing yards piled up by NFL teams, ranging from the league’s new rules, which are meant to speed up games, to the lust for passing, to the evolution of defensive strategy. They’re all interesting explanations, but I don’t buy them. I know the real reason the running game is going downhill, and I say that the finger should be pointed directly at the running backs themselves. Today’s backs lack the basic skills that made men like Simpson and Jim Brown so successful. Most of today’s running backs, it seems, never learned the basics of being a runner. The stiff

arm is non-existent. Backs often carry the ball in the wrong hand — if you’re going left, the ball should be in your left hand, going right, in your right hand — and it costs them in their ability to balance, and to protect the ball and themselves. For some reason, backs are just not getting the proper instruction anymore while playing in college or in the pros. Look at Herschel Walker. He’ll take the ball in his right arm and go down every time with it in his right arm. That’s one of the reasons he isn’t a truly great runner. It also seems that running backs aren’t taught to see the whole filed the way they should. If a play is called to a certain hole and the entire defense i there waiting for him, nine times out of 10, today’s back will still follow the play rather than break for daylight. I don’t think that the running

game has lost its importance. It is still the key element to winning. Coaches know that the run sets up the pass, and although it seems the opposite may be true some days, good football always will be based on that principle. The Chicago Bear, for example, still have great success with their running game, even though Walter Payton —a classic runner — has retired. Maybe the lack of complete skills started with the specialization so prevalent in the game today. Back when I was playing, a running back stayed in the game for almost every offensive down. We ran the ball and caught passes, too. Today, you almost never see a star running back staying in the game that long. Next time you are watching an NFL game and a team is going nowhere on the ground, keep an eye on the running back. See if he’s using a stiff arm. See if he’s switching the ball to the correct
