12 advance to area contest
IBy KAREN S. LOWRY Extension Agent 4-H and Youth * If you bought some land, could you tell if it was a good place to build a house or if you could put in a septic system or what type of management practices you should use on the land? A youth involved in soil judging could tell you those things. Soil judging allows youth to understand land usage based on the soil that makes up the land. Thirty-two FFA members from four FFA chapters put their soil judging skills to the test this year in the Kosciusko County Soil Judging Contest with twelve youth advancing to the area contest. The top five scoring individuals in the county contest were as follows: first — Ryan Wilson, Whitko; second — Tammy Eberly, Whitko; third — Christa Schipper, Whitko; fourth — Loretta Schafer, Wawasee; fifth — Shawn Krull, Wawasee. The top three teams in the county contest were as follows: first place team — Tammy Eberly, Christa Schipper, Mike Whetsei, Ryan Wilson, Whitko FFA Chapter; second place team

Berkey is the son of Steve and Arlene Berkey of Syracuse. A freshman, Berkey is majoring in business and is a graduate of Wawasee High School. Dust with brush When cleaning my house, I have one piece of equipment I can’t do without: a three-inch, natural-bristle paint brush. You would be pleasantly surprised at how great it is to use for dusting. I have a dining-room set that has intricate carving on the chairs. I used to go crazy trying to dust in and out of all the designs. It’s so easy to use and inexpensive, too. I just love it. Eunice F., S. Euclid, Ohio.

APPLE SEEDLINGS — The second grade classes of Syracuse Elementary School celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on Friday, Sept. 28. Included in the celebration were a number of activities involving apples. An apple tasting party, the making of applesauce and covers for apple recipe booklets and filmstrips on Johnny Appleseed's life rounded out the afternoon activities as the children travelled from room to room. Each second grade teacher sponsored one of these activities. Second grade teachers are Karel Neff, Ruth Robinson. Eloyce Van Lue and Sharon Wright. A field trip to Amish Acres on Thursday, Oct. 4, gave the children an opportunity to learn more about their Amish neighbors. This included tasting cider made in a very old cider press.
