Firestone combines qualities to make herself a diving dynamo

IBy SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer Concentration, power and grace. If a diver can put thosb characteristics together while competing, it appears as “poetry in motion” for a spectator. Dawn Firestone, a Wawasee High School senior, has been able to combine the ingredients for success on the diving board

DIVING DYNAMO — Wawasee senior Dawn Firestone stands beside the Warrior pool diving board that has vaulted her to much success throughout her career. Firestone set a new school and conference record in the 11-dive event during the finals of the Northern Lakes Conference Championship Meet Saturday at Concord High School. Firestone's total of 433.30 points eclipsed the old school and NLC record of 431 points set by Nancy Amos in 1978. (Photo by Scott Davidson)

throughout her career. That fact was never more evident than on Saturday during the one-meter diving competition at the Northern Lakes Conference Championship Meet at Concord High School. Firestone, the heavy favorite in the field, not only outdid the competition by a “large” margin (the second place diver was 93 points behind her), but she also established a new school and con-

ference record in the process. With her total of 433.30 points for 11 dives, Firestone shattered the old mark of 431 points set in 1978, oddly enough, by another Lady Warrior, Nancy Amos. “I was just concentrating on doing my best and I wasn’t even thinking about breaking the record,” said Firestone about her effort. With her previous best effort at 372 points for 11 dives, Firestone was not sure if the record was obtainable. “I really couldn’t believe that I did it because I looked at the record before the season and I thought that it was just too far off for me,” she added. “I knew the record was possible for her but as well as she dove on Saturday, she has done a few of her dives even better than that before,” commented coach Roger Karns, who almost fell out of his judge’s seat while watching Firestone complete her last dive on Saturday. “Dawn’s performance on Saturday was one of the best that I’ve ever seen and she was really on with her dives,” said Rex Rymers, who served as assistant coach for the program during Dawn’s freshman and sophomore seasons. Additionally, Rymers has been involved with helping Firestone train and work on her diving skills since she took up the sport about 10 years ago. Firestone, who began diving in the fifth grade, has provided more than just an abundance of talent to the swim program at Wawasee this season, according to her coach. “Dawn has worked hard to improve her diving but she's also brought senior leadership to our young team,” said second-year coach Karns. The Lady Warriors finished the regular season at 12-4 after posting wins over Angola and Culver Girls’ Academy last night

(Tuesday) and now the sectional looms on the horizon for Firestone and her teammates. “I just hope the sectional goes as well as the conference meet did,” she said with a slight smile. “What I have to do now is really work hard to get ready for the state meet.” Firestone has finished first in every competition this season except one, although she does know what it’s like to be close, but not on top, in the sport. Last season, as a junior, Firestone teamed with senior Julie Gunn to give the squad a “diving duo” second to none. The only thing was that, while Firestone had a fine season, she always ended up second behind her teammate. “Dawn was a fine diver last season, but she has worked hard and really improved her mental approach to the sport,” remarked Karns. / While being a talented individual, Firestone is quick to heap praise on the people who have helped her progress at Wawasee. “Rex Rymers has been there a lot for me and Karns and John (current assistant coach John Blunk) have really helped me along,” the diver commented. “Dawn has really paid her dues to get where she’s at and it’s definitely her turn to shine,” said Rymers. “There was always a friendly rivalry between her and Julie and I think it made both of them better divers because of the effort they put into competing against one another for so long," he added. With a conference crown under her belt, Firestone is aiming towards bigger things this season after placing second at the sectional and 14th in the state finals in 1989. “All of the hard work paid off for me on Saturday, but now I have to work really hard because this year I’m shooting for a top eight finish at state,” she said. “Dawn is a very powerful individual, which helps her diving, but she also can picture what she's doing while she’s doing it and that really is important for a diver,” remarked Karns. “I think that she still has room for improvement, even after Saturday’s effort, and I also believe that a top eight finish at the state meet is something for her to shoot for,” he added. While not wanting to make any predictions, Rymers believes that his pupil will make an impressive showing at state. “Dawn has always been a diver who does much better rising to the occasion, and at the state level that’s very important.” the former coach noted. Although she also placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke at the NLC Meet and swam a leg of the 200 medley relay (fourth) and the 200 freestyle relay (third), Firestone definitely prefers diving. “I can’t swim that fast and I like the easy stuff (diving) anyway,' ’ she said with a laugh. The way she performed on Saturday, Firestone definitely made the one-meter diving event look like “easy" stuff Bowling Sunday Nite Mixed Millers Heating 25 7 Cherry Pickers 24 8 The BS'ers 20 12 MandW 19 13 Indiana Dimensional 14’/i 13'7 Dare Devils 13Vi 18'7 Cocineros 11 17 Indiana Dimensional 44 9 23 Indiana Dimensional *2 9 23 Indiana Dimensional *3 7 25 High team game Cherry Pickers — 640 High team series Millers Heating — 1838 500 series C Brower 525, D Schmucher 527?
