New Paris author chronicles family’s faith in first book

By JULIE MOORE Staff Writer He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God; in Him will I trust. .. Psalms 91:1,2. So quoted Catherine Beachy Yoder in her first book, “Hold Them Near.” The New Paris author preserves her paternal family’s history, and documents their faith in the recently released work. In July 1986, when seven surviving brothers and sisters decided to mark the graves of their eight siblings, someone suggested writing down the Amish family’s history. Yoder did. A granddaughter of the Plain City, Ohio, jbouple — Noah and Sara Beachy — whose infants had perished due to a congenital heart disease, Yoder wrote the book to show how God works through the most terrible situations. “I just started asking what really happened,” said the author, who found herself digging through death records, newspaper clippings and family documents, as well as talking to family and friends. All the while, the manuscript was her “secondary project.” At ‘Molder of Dreams’ to be shown at Wawasee Heights “Molder of Dreams” featuring Guy Doud, former national teacher of the year, will be shown in Wawasee Heights Baptist Church, on Sunday, Oct. 14, and on Sunday, Oct. 21. Both presentations will be at 6 p.m. “Molder of Dreams” is a Focus on the Family Films production. Growing up, Guy Doud was a loser and everyone knew it. Any hopes and dreams he had in life would have to be kept to himself because Hhat’s all they would ever be.. dreams. Watch Doud’s riveting true story unfold in a two-part film. His heartwarming words give insight and inspiration to parents, teachers and students alike, and, as a “Focus on the Family” radio broadcast, drew the greatest response ever.

profitable. Meanwhile, two people who were interviewed for the book passed away. “There was an urgency to get it out, to let people know it was done, ’ ’ noted Yoder. She decided to publish the book herself. Using the printing equipment of the Gospel Echoes Team prison ministry in Goshen where her father, Marvin Beachy, is director, Yoder tried her hand at the trade. “We’ve learned a lot through it,” explained the young author, now a typesetter and printer, too. “When you publish something yourself, you make a lot of mistakes yourself. ” Nevertheless, she managed to add significant detail during the final stages of production, such as using a quilt block design to highlight the first letter of each paragraph. (The pattern came from a doll quilt her grandmother had made.) The first copy of “Hold Them Near” went up for sale at the Gospel Echoes Benefit Auction on Aug. 4. Bringing a price of $250, the book was bought by the surviving Beachy siblings and given to their father. The author inscribed “To Grandpa with love” in that first volume. Thus far, the book has been well received. But with the retelling of the story comes pain for the family. “I think it’s hardest on my grandpa because it’s kind of digging up old hurts and old sorrows,” explained Yoder. “He was gracious to allow me to write this story down.” Sales are going well. But no matter what the revenues, Yoder says knowing that she has written something that others may benefit from reading makes her efforts worth it. In the book she documents her grandparents’ faith in the Lord as it grew through their trials. “Nobody else understood because nobody else had lost that many children,” said Yoder. At the start of the manuscript, she portrays her grandparents as “serious” Christians, but they had not yet developed what the author calls “that deep faith.” “As they went through these sorrows, they — especially Grandmother — had to depend on the Lord,” explained Yoder, recalling memorized passages from her grandmother’s diary by heart.

Relatives had seen her grandmother cry out to the Lord asking for strength to deal with the deaths of her children. In her diary, Sara Beachy had scribbled the following passages: “Sad was the hour, but safe was her soul ... If she has to suffer, I just wish she would go home.” Still Yoder wo'nders if her grandmother’s faith would have been so strong had she not experienced such deep, recurring sorrow. Whatever the answer, the intent of the book, said Yoder, is not to idolize her grandparents, but rather to encourage people to glorify God. “That’s what they wanted.” To date, the New Paris author doesn’t know if she’ll write another manuscript. “For me to write, the story just has to grab me; I have to be compelled,” explained Yoder. “I can’t sit down and say, ‘I want to write a book; what should I write about’?” The author is married to Kenton Yoder and has a one-year-old son, David. ------ * > si w ONWARD TO NEW BUILDING — The congregation of the North Webster United Methodist Church officially moved in to their new building on Sunday, Oct. 7. Following worship at 9:30 a.m., a processional led the congregation to the new building on Epworth Forest Road. Escorted by a North Webster police car, those participating in the processional carried balloons and umbrellas for their one-mile trek. While the rain may have dampened the roads and walkways, it did not dampen the spirits of those who participated in the morning parade. A CROP Walk is a walk by individuals to raise funds to feed needy people locally and around the world. It is sponsored by Church World Service. Sponsors donate predetermined amounts per kilometer, with 25 percent of the funds raised remaining in Kosciusko County. In the past, these local funds have gone to Combined Community Service in Warsaw, and the Emergency Food Pantry, which is sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association. CROP Walk organizers are grateful for the help they received from the Syracuse Police Department and Civil Defense, as well as from those local businesses that contributed food, other products and coupons.
