Akers records first victory as head football coach
I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer For the first time all season, the Wawasee Warriors didn’t have to look across the field to see victory celebration rites in the waning moments of a football game. It was Wawasee fans who danced in the bleachers and Wawasee players who embraced each other on the sidelines. And it was rookie head coach Troy Akers who had a cooler of ice water dumped on his head in celebration of the Warriors’ 12-0 victory at Plymouth last Friday. The game marked Wawasee’s first win of the season and Akers’ first win as head coach of the team. “You’re always going to remember your first win, but this was a well-executed win and that made me feel good and the assistant coaches feel good,” Akers said. Without any penalties or turnovers, the Warriors executed their game plan to near perfection. The Rockies, on the other hand, racked up 68 penalty yards and were forced into five turnovers by the Wawasee defense. The Warrior defenders set the tone for the game, stopping the Plymouth offense and setting up both Wawasee touchdowns. The “Rockies mounted drives at the beginning of the first and second halves but were held in check for

most of the game. “It just seemed that when they had their backs to the wall, they came through every -time,” Akers said of his defense. For three quarters, the Warriors and Rockies played a game of field position, with neither team finding the end zone. Field position came into play midway through the fourth quarter when Wawasee punter Jim Mclntosh pinned the Rockies at their own 6-yard line with a 33-yard boot. Plymouth’s offense couldn’t move the ball so it tried a quick kick from the 4-yard line on a third-and-long play. Wawasee’s defense penetrated into the Plymouth backfield and deflected a rushed punt that only travelled 15 yards. Defensive back Ab Edmonds picked up the ball and returned it 10 yards to the Plymouth 9-yard line. When the Wawasee offense took to the field, it was time for running back Buster Clevenger to get into the act. The hard-nosed senior ran for eight yards on first down, and plunged into the end zone from the 1-yard line on the next play. The extra point play failed, and the Warriors held a 6-0 lead with 6:21 left in the game.
Wawasee’s defense came through with another big play the next time Plymouth had the ball. Faced with a second-and-nine from his own 34-yard line, Rockie quarterback Jason Rudd looked like he was trying to throw the

ball away when he rifled a pass near Dan Smith’s midsection. But the Wawasee linebacker held on to the pass and returned it to the Plymouth 14-yard line. Warrior quarterback Mark Nicolai led the Warriors into the end zone on the ensuing offensive series. After Clevenger was stopped for no gain on first down, Nicolai hooked up with Tim Schwartz for a 13-yard pass play. Two plays later, the junior signal-caller scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. That made the score 12-0 with just 3:39 left in the game. Although the defense set up both scores, Wawasee’s offense played a significant role in the victory too. The Warriors moved the ball well enough to hold their own in the war of field position. And they sustained enough drives to give the defense a chance to rest. With Clevenger leading the way, the Warrior running game sprang to life for the first time all season. He sliced his way to 90 yards on 22 carries with the help of a revitalized offensive line. The basic trap play up the middle seemed to work for Clevenger all night. “We trapped their big people,” Akers said of his offensive line. “They weren’t devastating blocks but they were good blocks.” After suffering lopsided defeats in their first four games, the vic-

tory was particularly sweet. Coach Akers thinks that the game was a sign that bigger and better things are in store for the 1-4 Warriors in the second half of the season. “I can tell there’s just going to be some good things to come,” he said. “We’re looking to finish strong these next three games.” Top Wawasee Efforts Tim Schwartz had another good game at wingback and defensive back. He caught four passes for 29 yards on the offensive side of the ball and recorded two interceptions and a sack on defense. Nicolai handled the quarterbacking duties for most of the game and completed seven of 17 passes for 34 yards. Sophomore Brandon Lozano completed two of three for 11 yards, while seeing limited action. Lineman Kyle Newcomer paced the defense with six solo tackles, three assists and one sack. Mike Wright had six solos and an assist; Jeremy Doerr recorded a solo, three assists and a sack; and Dan Smith had three solos, three assists and an interception. To Host Tigers The Warriors will put their onegame winning streak on the line when they host the leagueleading Warsaw Tigers on Friday. The Tigers sport a perfect 3-0 Northern Lakes Conference record, and a 4-1 mark overall.

Taking an easy 119-54 win at North Wood last night (Tuesday), the Wawasee girls' swim squad improved to 8-2 (2-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference) with its sixth consecutive win. “We swam reasonably well, although the girls are still tired and we did some different things with our line-up to get some people experience in different events," said coach Roger Karns. The squad won 10 of the 12 events against the Lady Panthers, with Danielle Laub (100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke) and Christy Rozow (200 IM and 500 freestyle) leading the way with two wins each. Other top finishers for the Lady Warriors included Sara Kline (200 freestyle), Brandee Carlson (50 freestyle), Dawn Firestone (diving) and Lori Boles (100 freestyle) in individual events. The squad also took first in the 200 medley relay, with the foursome of Firestone, Boles, Laub and Carlson taking the win. The team of Carlson, Laub, Boles and Kline teamed to capture the 200 freestyle relay. Second place finishers for the squad included Lee Ann Kuilema, Naugler, Firestone, and Carlson in individual events and Amy Pratt, Kline, Naugler and Rozow in the 400 freestyle relay.

Action in the Goshen High School pool is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with teams from Goshen, Warsaw, Penn, Concord, North Wood and South Bend Clay scheduled to compete, along with Wawasee. “Plymouth has a strong team and the tough competition on Saturday at Goshen will come from Penn, Concord and Warsaw, with Penn being the most talented team there, by far,” stated Karns. The Lady Warriors will return to action next Tuesday when they host NLC foe Warsaw at 6:30p.m. “Warsaw has a strong team and probably the most overall talent in the conference,” said Karns. Compete In Mishawaka Relays The Lady Warriors totaled 101 points to finish third in the seventeam field at the Mishawaka Relays on Saturday. “It was a decent field of teams, with a lot of competitive races, and we held together well and did a nice job,” said Karns of the event. The powerful Penn squad took first on the day, easily outdistancing runner-up Homestead, who finished with 108 points. Wawasee (101) was third, followed by South Bend Clay (77), Mishawaka (36),
