John Bayne John Woodrow Bayne, 71, 1304 E. Fort Wayne St., Warsaw, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 20,1990, in his home. Born June 11, 1919, in Warsaw, he was the son of E. C. and Anna Elizabeth Holbrook Bayne. On October 26, 1940, in Lima, Ohio, he married Martha A. Grimes; she survives. A lifetime Kosciusko County area resident, he worked at Dalton Foundries, Inc. for 41 years. He attended Warsaw United Brethren Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Steve Bayne, Warsaw; one stepdaughter, Coleen LaFollette, North Webster; one stepson, Richard McCallister, California; one grandson; and one brother, Donald L. Bayne, Warsaw. Funeral services were held at 2

Deßrular, 80, 351 Baker St., Cromwell, died at 7:22 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26,1990, in McCray Memorial Hospital, Kendallville. Born November 7, 1909, in Cromwell, he was the son of Ellsworth and Nellie Sparrow Deßrular. On January 13,1945, in Fort Wayne, he married Leia Wineland; she survives. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Deßrular was a retired carpenter and had been employed with Syracuse Rubber Company. He was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II and a

Lake City to acquire Goshen, Nappanee banks
R. Douglas Grant, president of Lake City Bank, Warsaw, and Thomas R. Ricketts, chairman and chief executive officer of Standard Federal Bank, Troy, Mich., announced Aug. 17 that Lake City and Standard Federal have executed a definitive agreement. under the terms of which Standard Federal will sell its branch offices and related deposit accounts in Goshen and Nappanee to Lake City. The acquisition of these branch offices and deposit accounts by Lake City Bank is subject to approval by the Office of Thrift Supervision, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Department of Financial Institutions for the State of Indiana. Application for regulatory approval is expected to be made within the next two weeks by Standard and Lake City and acted upon within 90 to 120 days afterward. Standard Federal Bank, headquartered in Troy, Mich., is a $9.75 billion FDIC-insured savings institution with 114 branch offices serving Michigan and Indiana. Standard Federal’s concentration of branch offices is in southeastern Michigan, where it has 68 offices. Lake City Bank is a $251 million, independent, locallyowned banking organization operating continuously since 1’872, with 15 offices currently in Kosciusko and Wabash counties. Dr. Frisch's data came from comparing the medical histories of 2,622 women who had been involved in college sports with 2,776 non athletes. Except for the exercise factor, the two groups shared similar diets, similar patterns of family cancer and smoking histories. The study also showed that the former college athletes were more likely to continue exercising and showing lower cancer rates.

RETIREE HONORED — Colonel and Mrs. G. Thorpe Mitchell, residents of Kosciusko County since 1977, were recently honored at a retirement ceremony at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The Mitchells moved to Indiana in 1970 when they were assigned to the 434th Tactical Fighter Wing of the Air Force Reserve at Grissom AFB in Peru. At that time, the colonel was instrumental in the creation of the first Reserve Tactical Fighter unit flying the A-37. He progressed from squadron instructor pilot to Wing Deputy Commander of Operations. In 1977, Col. Mitchell transferred to the 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing at Fort Wayne. He flew the F-100 Super Sabre and was one of the first to convert to the F-4 Phantom which the unit now flies. In 1980, he won “Top Gun” honors in the Indiana State Gunnery Meet. He also functioned as commander of the 122nd Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron which also won top honors in the state. Since 1984, Col. Mitchell has been assigned to Headquarters, Air Force Logistics Command, at Wright-Patterson AFB. He has served as the mobilization augmentee to the director of Tactical Forces. f Pictured are Col. and Mrs. (Karen) Mitchell with Major General John Riddle, Reserve,' Augmentee to the Chief of Staff, Air Force Logistics Command. Col. Mitchell completed 30 years of * service with the US Air Force. Mrs. Mitchell was also recognized for 28 years of loyal support. The Mitchells reside at Lake Tippecanoe and currently serve as pastors of the Northerniakes Cathedral of Praise on SR 13 and CR 800 N, two miles north of North Webster.

Paul Pence Paul Pence, 77, died on Sunday, July 8,1990, in Venice, Fla. Born December 5, 1912, in Columbia City, he was the son of Lavern and Florence Ruckman Pence. In 1963, he was married to Gladys King, who died August 23, 1990. A summer resident of the Syracuse Lake and Lake Wawasee areas for 30 years, he and his wife spent their winters in Venice for 14 years. Mr. Pence was an interior decorator and owner of Country Charm Mobile

His survivors include two sisters, Bessie Dowell, Columbia City, and Nina Young, Ann Arbor, Mich.; three nephews, Phil Dowell, Fort Wayne, Keith Dowell, Columbia City, and Dr. William Meyers, Syracuse; and one niece, Barbara McNaghy, Rogersville, Mo.
