Communities clean up litter “Sack it to me.” This is what people around the nation are saying as they pitch in to clean up the litter in their communities. Milwaukee, Wis , whose annual citywide cleanup campaign is called, in fact, “Sack It To Me Saturday,” has, joined such diverse communities as Lake Hartwell, S.C., Azusa Canyon forest near Irwindale, Calif., and Chicago, 111., in the trend toward establishing annual cleanup pro grams to encourage citizens to keep their communities beautiful. Companies are pitching in. too. For instance, the Miller Brewing Company donates over 100,000 plastic bags a year to these and other local cleanup efforts. A little heart, a little elbow grease and a few cleanup bags are all it takes to have your community on the way

Focus on KCH —
Pastoral care department
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the second in a series of monthly columns authored by the staff of Kosciusko Community Hospital. This month’s column is written by Rev. Richard Anderson, pastor of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church and chaplain at KCH.) Someone asked me the other day why KCH has a pastoral care department and just exactly what it is. I was happy to answer that question, and perhaps the answer I gave will answer some

Stained teeth Certain food and drink will permanently stain teeth. These include tobacco, coffee, tea and berries of different kinds — and they will stain the teeth of even those who brush regularly. Antibiotics and excessive fluoride can also stain (Johns Hopkins Medical Letter). Dentists have techniques for whitening teeth which are very effective, but also very expensive. — Health News Network

questions others may have. The Pastoral Care Department has been around a long time, but little was done in development until Wayne Hendrix joined KCH as president. As a hospital administrator, he has a holistic approach to the healing process. Therefore, we at KCH are concerned with the well-being of the whole person, medically, spiritually and emotionally. Our president began meeting with the local ministerial association, and together they formed a

Chaplaincy Task Force in 1989. As a result of these meetings, the pastoral care department was strengthened, and I was appointed the first staff chaplain of KCH. One of the first things we did was to develop some spiritual prayer literature for the patients and institute a Dial-A-Prayer for the patient rooms. Then we started training classes for our chaplain associates program. As a result, we have volunteer chaplains who are local ministers on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Who do we minister to? Many times a doctor or nurse will refer us to a troubled patient. KCH is admitting a growing number of patients who live outside QMftimmediate area. Some are visiting, others choose to come to JtCH because of the facilities and medical staff, and some are vacationing. We in the pastoral care department deal with emotional and spiritual trauma because we really care. Cyndy Light, assistant to the chaplain, coordinates between the patients and their local pastors, and refers patients without a pastor to the chaplain. On Aug. 29-30, training classes are offered for our chaplain associates program, and we will begin to develop a Post Trauma Stress Disorder team. Pastors who are interested in joining may phone the chaplain's office at 267-3200 for more information. We are also available to speak to church groups. The pastoral care department looks forward to demonstrating how we care about the spiritual and emotional needs of our patients.
