Church records are valuable to genealogists. Sometimes there seems to be nothing else to be had But it is not easy to locate records, particularly if the church where the ancestors attended no longer exists, due to passage of time.

The brick wall that genealogists run into Was between me and my ancestors, Thomas Rogers, and his wife, Sarah Matheny. Both was born in 1772, probably in Virginia, lived for many years in Harrison County near Elizabeth, just west of Louisville, Ky. A number of years ago, we found the Rogers Campground Church and Cemetery for which they gave the ground. It was in the first regular Methodist charge in Indiana. We found their graves. DePauw University in Greencastle houses the Archives of In diana United Methodism, in the Roy O. West Library A letter to them brought a prompt reply, four photocopied sheets and a meager charge. They apologized for not having more, but the pages were packed with stories of my family, related families, including daughters with married names. One in-law built a raft to move across the Ohio River from Louisville, where they all were, to Indiana Territory On the first trip, the cow swam behind the raft. They tied her on shore and returned for another load. When they came with the second load, the cow had been eaten by bears. This was 1806 or before. In hopes of helping others to obtain material from denomina tional archives and repositories, each column will contain information, alphabetically Remember to send a self addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) and offer to pay charges 520. Would like information about Susan GRINDLE, wife of John HALL (or STRUBLE), mother of Louisa HALL of North Webster, Jane BOWLBY of Etna Green, Elizabeth REED of Etna Green, Rose GOBLE of Goshen and Ella ANGEL of North Webster. Are there descendants of these five sisters who can help me?

WESTFALL TALKS ABOUT NIPSCO — The program for the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club was given by Robert Westfall, who was also program chairman of the Tuesday, Aug. 14. meeting at Gropps Restaurant in Syracuse. Westfall talked about his new job at NIPSCO, which is customer satisfaction. He works out of the office of the senior vice president in Hammond. He indicated that NIPSCO is trying to get back to being a service-oriented company, as they were in the beginning. For example. they are installing drive-up windows for the convenience of customers to pay bills; they now have an 800 service phone number; and they are offering service contracts on water heaters and furnaces.
