Awards picnic —
Wawasee summer swim club concludes season with program
After completing a successful summer season of competition, members of the Wawasee summer swim club, along with coaches and family members, met last week for an awards program/picnic at Lakeside Park in Syracuse. “We had a very good season with the largest team (over 60 swimmers) Wawasee’s had in several years and with the winning of our first-ever conference meet,” emphasized coach Roger Karns. In addition to thanking the members of the club for a job well done during the season, Karns also took the opportunity to salute some of the other persons that made the team a success this summer. “Jennifer (Titus) did a fine job as assistant coach this summer for us and we received some help from Abby Lelle as well. The parents involved in the club, including club president Rick Mathew and vicepresident Mary Marty, really helped out a lot and were very instrumental in the success of the conference meet that we served as hosts for,” the coach pointed out.
Zohn takes first in outing
Mary Zohn finished the day in first place during the August 1 outing of the Big Boulder Belles Ladies Golf League in Milford. During the “Mystery Hole” competition, Evelyn Orn captured second place while Pauline Beckneel took third place honors. Janet Brandon captured first place during the July 25 outing of the Big Boulder Belles. During the “Predict your Score” competition, Gloria Van Curen finished in second place while Jean Niles took third place honors.
Equipment to be issued
First-year Wawasee football coach Troy Akers has announced that equipment for members of the Wawasee freshman football squad will be issued Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. in the PE Annex at the high school. Practice for the freshman squad will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16. Anyone with questions about the freshman squad should should contact coach Kerry Murphy at 457-5990 for more information. Akers also announced that the Warriors will hold a pre-season “Soap” game on Tuesday. Aug. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field. Admission to the scrimmage will be a bar of soap or a towel that will be used by the football program at Wawasee. The Warriors will begin play Friday, Aug. 17, by participating in the Goshen Jamboree. Regular season action for the squad begins on Friday. Aug 24. with a non-conference contest at Fort Wayne Carroll. Karns added that the club was also represented well at the agegroup state meet in Indianapolis this past weekend as U swimmers travelled to compete in the high-caliber meet. The club will also be represented later this week in the prestigious zone championships in Oklahoma City, with Eric Schaekel and Andy Kryder competing in the event. 11 swimmers compete in meet Eleven swimmers from the Wawasee Summer Swim Club traveled to Indianapolis this past weekend to compete in the agegroup state meet The gathering of some of the top swimmers from throughout the state took place in the Indiana University Natatorium. “All of the swimmers turned in a good effort in Indy with the level of competition that they faced,” commented coach Roger Karns, who accompanied the swimmers to the meet. Taking top honors for the club was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kassie Biddle, Kara Mathew, Jenny Marty and Carrie Grothaus. The foursome, competing in the girls' 9-10 age group division, finished in seventh place. The team also captured 13th place in the 200-yard medley relay event Competing in the boys' 9-10 age group, club member Kyle Metcalf placed 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke. Justin Banks, competing in the boys' 13-14 age division, placed 12th in the 100 backstroke event. Also competing for the club in Indianapolis were swimmers Stacy Naugler, Jennifer Ganshorn. The tennis tournament was one of the events held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual American Cancer Society-Kosciusko County Golf Tournament held at the South Shore Golf Course in Syracuse. The events combined to raise approximately 150,000 to assist cancer patients throughout the area.

Area skiers fare well in Midwest Championship
Several local skiers from the Lakeland area took part in the 1990 Midwest Regional Water Ski Championships held this past weekend at Cindonway Shores and Camelot Lake near Milford. The three-day event (FridaySunday) attracted more than 300 of the top male and female skiers, from 12 midwestem states, to the area for the high-caliber competition. Brandon Bucher, competing in the Junior Boys division, led the efforts of area skiers, placing first overall in that division. Bucher finished first in the slalom and jump competition while adding a fourth place effort in the tricks event. Denny Carroll took first in the jump event in the Men’s 111 division while Jerry Hickman was the jump champion in the Men's IV division. Jill Tully, competing in the Women's II group, finished second in the jump, eighth in the tricks and ninth in the slalom competition Tully completed the tournament by finishing in fifth place overall in her group Other area skiers placing in the overall standings for their division included Shane Bucher (seventh in slalom, sixth in tricks, 17th in jump and fourth overall) and Steve Plummer (40th in slalom, 15th in tricks, Steffen captures 18-hole action Evelyn Steffen took top honors in 18-hole action of the South Shore Ladies Golf League during their July 31 outing in Syracuse. x’Jane Wells captured second place during the competition while Jeanette Keim finished third In nine-hole action. SLALOM SKIING —Owe of the mere thaw 3W skiers who took part in the 1M» Midwest Regional Water Ski Championships this past weekend at Cindonway Shores and Camelot Lake takes his turn in the slalom competition held on Friday at Cindonway. The tournament, conducted Friday through Sunday, saw more than 3M of the top skiers from 12 Midwestern states travel to the area to compete in slalom, tricks and jumping competition.
Ski Championships were also held recently at Cindonway Shores and Camelot Lake. The local WSI ski team from Cindonway took top honors in the team scoring while the squad from Camelot placed second. Fourteen new state records were established in slalom, tricks and jumping events during the twb-day tournament. Local skiers establishing new state records during the event included Brandon Bucher in Junior Boys slalom and overall, Shane Bucher in Boys' slalom, Denny Carroll in Men's 111 jumping and Jerry Hickman in Men's IV jumping. Other area skiers who took part in the state championships included: Shanda Bucher, Brent Klutz, Jeremy Plummer, Brock Manning, Mike Vint, Cory Manning.
