Leesburg couple helps with orphanage in Port-au-Prince
By JULIE MOORE Staff Writer
When Chuck and Dorothy Dye of Leesburg left with 17 other people from the North Webster Church of God to help build an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, they were not sure what lay ahead of them. “We had been talking about it for a long time,” said Dorothy. Yet the retired couple had never been part of a mission workcamp. They had listened to the words of a missionary in Haiti many times when she visited their North Webster congregation. And after they made the decision to go, the Dyes met with the entire group several times before the departure to learn about the culture and the people of Haiti. Nevertheless, they still were venturing into the unknown. “We both felt we had to go." said Dorothy. The Dyes four grown children

were not so sure. Although they didn’t voice their objection to their parents, they admittedly had some apprehension about the trip. "They didn’t like the idea at all,” said Dorothy. “They said. ‘We were just about ready to say we don't want you to go, Mom and Dad ” But their children waited until after Chuck and Dorothy returned from the weeklong workcamp to tell them about their reservations. "Boy, they were glad to see us back," said Dorothy. The present orphanage in the Haitian capital houses only 16 children. The new structure, when complete, will have room for nearly twice that number. During their weeklong stay in mid-July, Chuck spent his days laying bricks for the first floor of the three-story orphanage while Dorothy cooked for the workers. Because food on the island costs nearly four times more than what Lakeland residents are used
to paying, the North Webster group took their own groceries to Haiti. In all, they had packed 19 boxes of food and planned to leave many of them behind. Sometimes putting as many as six to a room, all 19 members of the North Webster group stayed in the home of the missionary who had visited their church. "The people we found to be compatible, beautiful, proud people,” said Dorothy. “I was snapping beans and I said to myself my what they would do with the ends of beans.” “It makes you sure appreciate the things you have here,” she continued. "You just don’t realize what other people don’t have.” The trip gave Chuck a greater appreciation for life as well. "It makes me appreciate (that) as much as we complain about our government at times, the fact is we do have a government that at least tries to help the people," he said. “We haven’t got a road in Kosciusko County as bad as the

God’s love is our source of comfort when sorrow descends
It could have happened to anyone, and it did happen to a well-known family in a small town. Because of a tragic but unforseeable accident, a little child was suddenly taken out of the world he had just recently entered. That the hearts of the entire town went out to the family was evident from the attendance at the funeral, which included many people who had never laid eyes on the little boy. However, it was the power of faith that did most to sustain the members of the family in this dark hour. They did not have to wait until tragedy occurred to discover the comfort of God's love, because they were already well aware of it. Sooner or later, sorrow must descend on every household. Do not wait for
