Rev. Walden to give seminars on grief
By JULIE MOORE Staff Writer
Mid-June marked a difficult time for Rev. Jerry D. Walden of the Wawasee Heights Baptist Church. What would have been Walden’s 16th wedding anniversary fell on the day before Father’s Day. A two-car accident claimed the life of the young pastor’s wife and

their three children along with two other teens on March 10,1989. “Every time you turn around there’s always something to remind you. It’s hard to put away the memories and put things into perspective,” said Walden, nearly 16 months after the accident. Yet as the pastor recalls, it wasn’t the death of his wife and children that caused his deep grief as much as it was the sever-

ing of his relationships with them. “I was at home visiting with a friend at 7:30 in the morning and they already had passed away,” he said. The pain came when “a police officer walked up to me and said, ‘Rev. Walden your wife and all three of your children were killed in an accident this morning.’” Walden, who admits pastors receive very little formal training in giving care to the grieving, returned to the pulpit one month after the accident and found many people willing to listen. “The reason you become functional again is that you don’t want to hurt any more,” said Walden.

In fact, he plans to hold a series of 10 seminars on grief for the community this sumimer at the Wawasee Heights Baptist Church. The seminars are to begin in July and will be conducted along with the regular Sunday evening worship at 6 p.m. “Grief is a process of dealing with’® broken relationship in a manner pleasing to God,” said Walden. People falsely believe if they don’t acknowledge the pain it will go away. “If you hurt, you hurt. The best thing to do is get it out in the open, deal with it,” and continue.

Milford United Methodists join Appalachia service
Five members of the Milford United Methodist Church joined the Appalachia Service Project Work Camp in McDowell County, West Virginia, on June 10-16. The local group included Amber Brown, Cheryl Brunjes and her son Steve, Ron Schwartz and his daughter Julie McMichael and Rev. Ben Whirledge. The group helped rebuild the foundation of an old miner's cabin in laeger, W.Va. and lived at the local elementary school during the weeklong stay. And, in the mean time, they also built a relationship with the family who lived in the house. Months before their planned departure, members of the group began preparing for their trip to the Appalachia region. In February, Whirledge attended a regional workshop where he learned about the culture and the socioeconomic situation of the peoples of the region. In the town of laeger, coal mining is still the primary industry, and the unemployment rate is near 30 percent. Whirledge said the workshop is designed to help those assisting in the project develop a “Christian attitude toward service." Beyond the workshop, the fivemember group conducted four

Group members also boned up on its basic construction skills before departing. The Appalachia Service Project provides home repair in the mountainous region of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Five adults staff a center for the summer in each county where service is provided.

These adults go into the community, find homes that need work and make all the arrangements including purchasing supplies and bringing them to the construction site. The program continues for eight weeks with a new group of 60 to 70 volunteers participating each week.
