COMMODORE WINNER — The “Creature of the North Shore” was this year’s Commodore winner. This unique float thrilled many flotilla fans as water spurted from the sea creature's mouth. Members of the winning crew include Dennis and Janet Spearman, Ginger and Scott Abbs, and Anne and Rod Wiengart. 48 creative entries in Sunday's flotilla parade

This year’s flotilla proved to be one of the biggest and the best parades ever with over 48 very creative entries. Marilyn Cole, chairwoman of the event was very pleased, “The flotilla went very well. We appreciate all the businesses and the individuals who participated. ’ ’ The big winner for this year recieved the beautiful Commodore’s Cup. This year’s award went to the Abbs family of Syracuse, for their entry “The Creature of the North Shore.” This entry proved to be a big favorite to the many patrons who watched the parade as cold, refreshing water spurted from the creature’s nose. “The Tribe of the Sitting Bud” received the Earl Money Award. Jim Caskey this year’s honorary commodore, led the many entries across the waters of Wawasee. People lined the shore lines and piers cheering on their favorite entries. The many decorated boats had a variety of creative themes. Boats ranged from this year’s big movie hits, “Batman,” “The Teenage Mutant Turtles,” and “Dick Tracy” to political themes such as the flag burning controversey to George Bush’s promise not to raise taxes. Winners were as follows: Commercial division — “Dangles Restaurant’’ first place; Hair Force, second place; and “Hop Hop Away to the Frog,” sponsored by the Frog Tavern received third place. Non-profit organizations — The “Island in the Sun Bible School” received the first place honor. Second place was given to the VFW Post 1342, Syracuse, for its “We Don’t Burn Our Flag.” Augsburger’s received a third place for the entry, “The Rubber Duck Regatta.” Residential — The Dan List family won first place for the

MEMORIES WILL NOT RETIRE — Dr. and Mrs. Floyd Rheinheimer were the guests of honor at an open house held Friday, June 29. at the Milford Community Building. Dr. Rheinheimer retired from the medical profession after 35 years in Milford. Approximately 500 people stopped by the community building to bid farewells to Floyd and Irene. Several lifetime members of the community gave testimonials about the doctor and his dedication to those in need. The Milford Area Development Council, Inc., hosted the open house and presented Dr. v Rheinheimer with a plaque, acknowledging his many years of success in the community. The doctor’s official retirement date was Saturday, June 30, the same day the couple left for a year-long vacation. (Photo by Stacey Lesch)

A veteran of Mermaid Festival beauty contests, Jennifer Leslie Woodward, “Miss Watibee Lake II” was crowned the 1990 “Queen of Lakes” on Saturday night. Jennifer won the title of “Mermaid Festival . Cutie Queen,” 16 years ago. «a Twenty-seven contestants competed in this year’s pageant which was the culmination of a hectic and heated (literally) day consisting of interviews, pageant instruction, and the Mermaid Festival Parade. Though the daughter of Richard and Luann Woodward of Warsaw did not participate in last year’s pageant, Jennifer was the second runner-up in the 1988 contest. Sponsored by The Papers Incorporated, Jennifer will begin her senior year at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College in the fall. First runner-up in the pageant was Ahunjillian Wells of Fort Wayne. Ahunjillian, “Miss Wawasee II,” is the daughter of Jane and Earl Wells. The 18-year-old has just completed her senior year at Northrop High School. Ahunjillian was sponsored by Jane and Earl Wells. i»-Jenna. S. deSomer, "Miss Papakeechie Lake,” was named second runner-up. The daughter of James and Ann Cavender of Syracuse, and Jerry and Sandra deSomer of Mirriwinni, Australia, Jenna just finished her junior year at Wawasee High School. The second runner-up was sponsored by Fitness Firm. Completing the field of the top five finalists were Warsaw’s Laura Kay White, “Miss Winona Lake,” and Jan Ray, “Miss Barbee Lake.” Sponsored by Culligan Water Conditioning of Warsaw, Laura won the swimsuit competition. A native of Pierceton, Jan was sponsored by DC Haircrafters. An award voted on by all the girls in the contest, “Miss Congeniality” honors went to Tammy Armbruster of Warsaw. Tammy, “Miss Stanton Lake,” was sponsored by Barb Trobaugh, a Shaklee consultant. Following the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, the final five had to answer a question posed by the master of ceremonies, Brett Wolf. What is the most pressing issue in' the world today, in your opinion? Low self-esteem among the people, ending wars all over the world, the idea that world freedom is a possibility, the right of democracy and world peace were parts of the impromptu responses from the contestants. Like many little girls who have grown up around the Mermaid Festival and the “Queen of Lakes” pageant, Jennifer has dreamed of winning this beauty cgntest. seeks executive council

In an effort to get organized, the newly formed Wawasee School Taxpayer Association approved a temporary slate of officers, set up a screening committee for the purpose of selecting an executive council, and voted on a dues’ structure, at an evening session Thursday, June 28. Ron Sharp kicked off the meeting by proposing a structure and set of bylaws for the new organization. Noting that the school board will not make a deci-

The pageant drew a total of 27 contestants and a gym full of spectators as Jennifer walked away with the coveted title. Though the 21-year-old said she maintained confidence in herself during the various rounds of the competition, she also commented that she was very relieved when named the winner. “Yes!” was her initial reaction, the newly crowned queen later shared. So that’s the reason we’re here tonight to organize and get an operation going whereby you have some say-so on what the school board does. As an individual they don't have to pay much attention to you but if you get an organization between 500 and 1,000, they’ll pay plenty of attention to you.” Though no action was taken on bylaws at this time, the group elected officers and planned for the selection of an executive council. In addition to these officers, the organizational structure of WSTPA will consist of a sixmember executive council. Winning the title, “Queen of Lakes,” also brings with it a SI,OOO cash prize from the North Webster Lions Club, SSOO scholarship, silver loving cup, queen’s scepter and crown, and bouquet of flowers. The first and second runners-up each received SIOO in cash and a S3OO and S2OO scholarship respectively. The Palace of Sports awarded the scholarships. Sponsored by the North Webster Lions Club and Theta Sigma chapter of Psi lota Xi, the pageant is now in its 45th year.
