Hospitality extended Over 20,000 people will converge on the Syracuse area this weekend, with the 28th Wawasee Flotilla being the reason for the serge of visitors. Regularly held the Fourth of July weekend, the annual event aTis taken place since 1961, with the exception of 1972 and 1973. It has become a Syracuse tradition and a popular occasion for people throughout Indiana and beyond. With something to offer everyone, Syracuse is transformed into a large city during the event, although the townsfolk manage to keep the small-town image and pleasant demeanor throughout the week. The festive weekend will begin with a fish fry from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Syracuse Scout Cabin and end with a fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Lakeside Park. Activities for everyone are sandwiched between, with everything from square dancing to hot air balloon rides being offered. Syracuse merchants and town employees put their best foot forward in the weeks leading up to the special weekend, with specials displayed throughout the area and extra police patrols being added to assure a safe time for everyone. However, Lake Wawasee remains at the center of attention, with a flotilla parade sure to be the largest in the state and a fireworks display prepared to equal that claim. Several volunteers throughout the Lakeland area will help to make the Wawasee Flotilla an enjoyable occasion. Join those who’ve made it an annual affair.
