Boat-in services '1 continue at Oakwood
Lake Wawasee’s Oakwood Park has resumed its Sunday morning boat-in services for the 21st year. Services, which are held beginning June 10 and continuing through the summer, ending on September 2, are held in front of the Oakwood Hotel. Each Sunday worship service is held from 8:30-9 a m. and the sermon is given by a member of the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association. The theme for this year’s boat-in worship is “Following God’s Compass: The Kingdom of Heaven.” Some worshippers attend services in boats which are anchored around the Lake Wawasee shores while others come by car or walk to the park where they make their seats on blankets and lawn chairs. The casual services allow church-goers to come-as-they-are whether it means wearing a bathing suit or a shirt and tie. Including during the sermon is special music, scripture reading, and prayer. The schedule for the remainder of the services will be: July 1 — Harlan Steffen, pastor of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, will serve as speaker with Ron Bruce, pastor of Syracuse Church of God, leading. July 8 — Ron Blake, pastor of Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene, will be speaker with Dick Bunnell, pastor of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, leading. July 15 — Jim Babbitt, pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, will be speaker with Ray
Shanklin, pastor of Freedom Chapel, leading. July 22 — Harlan Steffen will be leading the service with lan Leitch speaking July 29 — Dick Bunnell will be speaker with Ron Bruce leading. August 5 — Harlan Steffen will be speaker with Tom Stiver of the Syracuse Church of God serving as leader. August 12 — Ron Blake will be speaker with Jim Babbit leading. August 19 — Ron Bruce speaker with Ray Shanklin as leader August 26 — Ray Shanklin as speaker with Dick Bunnell leading September 2 — The last boat-ih worship service of this year. Jim Babbitt will deliver the message while Ron Blake leads the service. Some of the musicians who will be appearing during July are: Jenny West on the Bth; Family of Praise, 15th; Brian Allen of Olivet Nazarene University, 22nd; and New Life Singers, 29. The Olivetians will appear once again on August 5. This unique worship service began in 1969 as a coffeehouse program at the Waco Beach and Drive-In area, next to Mock’s Marina. One Sunday morning, a local adult supporter of the program, which then involved youth of the area, came by water. John Goldman tied his boat to the pier and suggested that the group sit by the water’s edge for Sunday worship, like at Galilee. The next year, the summer boat-in worship service was initiated.
