Heidi Young is getting ready for state scholarship pageant
By JENNIFER WOODWARD Staff Writer
Heidi Young, the 1989 “Miss Kosciusko,” is preparing for the Indiana State pageant to be held June 25-30. As she explains the preparation has become a full time job. Her busy workout includes lots and lots of practicing! Young and her mother will practice interview questions one to two hours a day in preparation for the interview segment of the pageant. As a queen contestant, Young must be aware of the events happening throughout the world and establishing her own opinion, “I’ve been reading Newsweek and watching all the news programs.” Young must also practice her walk to enable a graceful prescence upon the stage, however she explains, “I’m very good at stage prescence. I'm able to put the audience at ease.” She has also been exercising every day so that she may be trim and fit for the bathing suit portion of the contest. However, Young’s favorite part of the pageant is the talent competition, “Hove to perform!” She will be singing “Happy Days Are Here Again.” Because of her strong vocalization. Young feels she has a good chance of being one of the eight finalists at the state pageant. All the queen contestants attended “Super Sunday,” a day in which they must perform their talent for scheduling purposes. After viewing the wide assortment of talent, Young feels veryconfident, “I can hold my own." Young has always been involved in singing. The Indiana University junior is a member of the “Singing Hoosiers” a

Next year Young is very excited about performing at Carnegie Hall in New York city. Other distinguished members of the “Singing Hoosiers” includes last year’s “Miss Indiana,” Lisa Williamson, and this year’s “Miss Elkhart County” Stephanie Swanson. out of milk cartons and gio sticks and discussed fund raises. It was decided to have a popcorn sale. At the second meeting, held in November, the TCs decided on their motto and promise. The motto is: Search, Discover, Share; the promise is, “I promise to love God, my family, and my country, and learn about the world..’’ This month, the boys sold popcorn with Brian Martin being the highest seller. The TCs received 40 percent of all sales and each Cub was rewarded with Tiger Cub hats and popcorn sales patches. Those who sold a certain amount earned points and received items of their choice. For the December meeting, a gift exchange was enjoyed. The boys received their hats and patches and prizes for selling popcorn. Randy Veach of the Milford Utilities Department and an ambulance driver for the Milford EMS told important facts about the ambulances and took the Cubs on a tour of the EMS facilities at the January meeting. For February, the boys took a tour of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department where Tshirts were handed out. Jerry Moser, Kosciusko County juvenile officer, lead the tour which included the dispatcher's room. He showed how a driver’s license can tell so much about a person by having the dispatcher run a license through the department's computer. The TCs also got to see the booking room, holding cells, court room, and shooting range. Airplanes for racing on a string between two poles were made at the March meeting. The Cubs also made clip-on decorations for the residents at Lakeland Loving Care Center in Milford. The day after the meeting, the Cubs went to the center and displayed how their airplanes flew for the residents. After the show, they passed out their clip-on decorations to the residents. Dave Hollar showed the boys how to tie a rope at the April meeting. He gave each TC 2 pieces of rope that each Cub could keep to practice tying for next year. He also gave them a chart to keep record on. The TCs had a hot dog sale at Campbell’s IGA in May. All the

'South Pacific' offers
an enchanting evening
| By BILL SPURGEON ~~]
More than 40 years have passed since the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd musical "South Pacific" opened in New York City. But the play is more durable than dated and can offer, if done well, an entrancing evening of entertainment. And done well is an apt description of the production currently underway at Enchanted Hills Playhouse east of Lake Wawasee. "South Pacific" is a World War II war story and a love story, based on James Michener's fascinating "Tales of the South Pacific.” The play, whose book was done by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, is about the May/December romance of Ensign Nellie Forbush, a Navy nurse from Little Rock, Ark., and French planter Emile de Becque, who has lived 25 years in the islands of the South Pacific in sort of a self-imposed exile because of an incident in his past. I've seen a few Nellie Forbushes, starting with Mary Martin in Manhattan’s Majestic Theatre some 39 Mays ago, and in that and in subsequent versions of the show that I have enjoyed. Nellie has carried the production. Gena Groppel is Nellie in the Enchanted Hills production, and this accomplished young actress proves to be a notable Nellie. She has a delightful voice and “I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair" and "I'm in Love With a Wonderful Guy" are high points of the evening. But Emile! Ezio Pinza, who started in the role, was already out of the picture in May of 1951, so my introduction to the role was through Ray Middleton, a most accomplished fellow. And John Payonk, the Enchanted Hills Emile, is every bit

his equal. Trained in the opera and a frequent performer in the Chicago area, Payonk has both the voice and the physical presence to be a totally successful, even commanding, Emile. And he is. His “Some Enchanted Evening" and “This Nearly Was Mine” can give even a jaded spectator goosebumps. Luther Billis was first portrayed in the Broadway version, and again in the film, by Delaware County Hoosier Myron McCormick. And he almost became Luther Billis, just as Juanita Hall almost became Bloody Mary. Brian Herriott is Billis at Enchanted Hills, and to this reviewer, remembering McCormick, he looked two young, too boyishly-handsome to be the hard-bitten, coniving, wheeling-and-dealing career Seabee that Myron McCormick created. But if you haven’t seen the McCormick version, you’ll think Herriott does quite well. That’s because he does. Julie Webster, a DePauw University student from Goshen, is a dandy Bloody Mary, both looking and acting the part of the opportunistic Tonganese lady. Vicki Wells is suitably winsome as her daughter Liat. Kevin Long has just the right youthful innocence to be a success as Lt. Joseph Cable, and Eric Herr (Capt. George

Brackett), Ron Bruhk (Cmdr. William Harrison) and Derek Phipps (Lt. Buzz Adams) are competent in major supporting roles. So are Beth Davis and Rick Dakota Hart as the two children (their “Dites-Moi” is a showstopper, not once but twice, the second time with Forbush). "South Pacific” is no easy play to stage. There are 22 scene changes in the script and director Earl Reimer boiled that number down to 17 to crowd the show onto the small stage at the barn theater. Changes are handled efficiently during brief blackouts but the show still runs nearly 2 1 4 hours, with better than 60 percent of that in the first of two acts. If I have any quarrel, it might be with the molded plastic furniture at de Becque’s home; I’d have been more at home with old wicker or rattan, and there surely ought to be plenty of that around here. Musical accompaniment for “South Pacific” is furnished by an 11-piece backstage orchestra, and it was equal to the job on opening night, handling the difficult score with ease. Costumes are appropriate, lighting is wellhandled and the few dances are well-choreographed. “South Pacific” continues through June 24, with performances Wednesday through Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 4 p.m.
