Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God moves to Syracuse
By JULIE MOORE Staff Writer
A new building now houses the Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God. The congregation celebrated its move from a rented building in Milford to the old Church of the Nazarene with an open house on June 2. Only founded six years ago, the history of the Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God is as varied as the structures in which it has been housed. During the churches infancy, only three or four families comprised the congregation who, at the time, formed a Church of God. A year after its inception, the congregation became an Assembly of God. Church members then took their services from their Syracuse and Milford homes and rented the room above Bonnie Gene’s Boutique in Milford. Although the congregation readied the rented building for worship, the building still housed its share of problems for the growing church.

“We used to meet in a real small room too big for the congregation,” said David Antu, a church board member. He and his brother-in-law Domingo Melendez, church secretary, remember the cold winter services in the building. They often had to shut off the portable heater because they could not hear over the noise it made. Although the fledgling church lost its pastor about e.ight months ago, the congregation has stuck together. Melendez, church secretary and second in command, took over the responsibilities of pastor and initiated the idea to move to the new location. And he and the congregation of 35 families moved quickly. Melendez saw an advertisement for the sale of the church on March 26 of this year. The next Saturday. Melendez met with a realtor at the church, and the following day the congregation came to inspect the property. “The first time we saw the church we said, In the name of Jesus, we want it to be our
church,’” said Melendez. And soon it was. Many prayers and a month’s worth of paperwork later, the property legally belonged to the Filadelfia Evangelical Spanish Assembly of God. Yet a large task lay ahead of the congregation. Plaster had fallen, and paint had peeled since the church building was last occupied. Church leaders estimated the work would take a month, but it was completed in less than three weeks. "We worked real hard to 10 and 11:30 at night, every night, and on the weekends," said Melendez. "Brothers, sisters, kids — in less than three weeks you see what we’ve done. "When we finished the church, I looked from the altar at what God has done for us,” he continued. “It’s a big blessing because we had no pastor and were a small congregation. We still have no pastor, the only one we have is Jesus Christ. "We pray to God, wishing one of us will be the pastor in the future,” continued Melendez. Although Melendez is not the of-

There are some who doubt that God could create a “great fish" to swallow Jonah. Os course, this means that they do not have faith in God or of His omnipotence iri creation as given in the first chapter of Genesis. The whole Bible is needed for "correctly dividing the Word of Truth” and so we go to the New Testament. The people had wanted a sign to prove that Jesus was the Messiah to come, and on-

’ly the sign of Jonah had been given to them: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the "Son of Man” be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40). This proved that Jonah was spewed out by the whale onto the ground and then resurrected by God. It also spoke of the future resurrection of our Lord and Saviour. Because of the preaching of Jonah concerning their judgment, all the people of Nineveh believed in God and repented of their sins. One cannot take isolated verses out of the Bible and interpret them correctly. In this instance, the following paragraph gives us the true meaning of Isaiah 13:5: “But He (Christ, the Messiah) was wounded for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” There are those who say we are thus healed of our sickness; but this has no reference to our health for verse 6 continues with “All we like sheep have gone astray” (in sins). It is the blood of our Saviour shed on the tree (cross) which heals us of our sickness of sins. Services at Oakwood Sunday summer worship services at Oakwood Park have begun. The speaker for Sunday, June 17, will be Rev. Harold Hazenfield,-whose sermon is entitled “Too Deep to Sand — Too Shallow to Fill.” Special music will be presented by Heather Staley. Worship services will be held throughout the summer at Mueller Auditorium at Oakwood Center. Dinner will follow the services in the dining room of Oakwood Hotel from 11:45 a.m.-l p.m. Services and meals are open to the public. There is a fee for the dinner.

In Mark 9:43 we read: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off; for it is better for thee to enter into maimed than having two hands to go to he 11...” and in verses 45 and 46, the same is said about the foot and the eye, if they also offend. I have heard of those who have cut off a hand because they did not understand this passage of Scripture. To know the truth, we must go to the preceding verse 42: “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in Me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.” Our Lord used physical things to portray spiritual ones. He is speaking here about a Christian who has grown spiritually from the “baby” stage to that of a “little child.” Anyone who offends him by leading him into sin, causing him to fall from grace, to cease growing, and to lose fellowship and rewards from the Lord, has committed a very serious offense. The seriousness of this was shown to the extent of getting rid of the hand, the foot, and the eye (not physically but spiritually), which have caused this for they are all related to the sips of “the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (which are) not of the Father, but of the world" (1 John 2:16). Documentary on Native Americans NBC will broadcast a one-hour documentary titled "Circle of the Spirit” on Sunday, June 17. The United States Catholic Conference produced the special which profiles the saga of Native Americans in the Catholic Church. WKJG Channel 33 will broadcast the program at noon, and WNDU Channel 16 will broadcast it at 1 p.m.
