Warriors conclude season with tough sectional final loss
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
Close, but not quite. The Wawasee baseball squad went looking for its first sectional championship since 1984 at Phend Field in Goshen Saturday but it just wasn't meant'to be. The Warriors fell to the host Redskins, 3-1 in the championship contest to finish the season at 13-15. “This is really disappointing because the kids have played hard and we thought that this was going to be our year to win it,” said an emotional coach Neal Frantz after the loss. “These

Breezy and cloudy conditions could not deter the Warsaw Tigers from defending their sectional crown at Rozella Ford Golf Course Monday. Warsaw totaled 326 over 18 holes to take the team title while Tippecanoe Valley placed second with 339. Meanwhile, Wawasee earned the third and final qualifying spot for the Homestead Regional by scoring 347. “We were hoping for a little bit better showing, but to qualify (for regionals) and move on is the bottom line,” assessed Warrior coach Gary Goshert. Wawasee rode the talent of Brent Baker, Randy Cesco, Joel Hadley, David Schmahl, and Mike Tuttle to its third place finish. Hadley led the quintet with an 18-hole total of 84, shooting a first round 41 and second round of 43. He was followed by Cesco, 43-44-87; Tuttle, 46-41-87; Schmahl, 45-44-89, and Baker. 46-49-95. Other team scores were: Northfield, 374; Plymouth, 376; Bremen, 383; Culver Military

seniors have been with me for four years and I really wanted them to go out on top with a sectional championship,” he added. Wawasee had defeated Goshen twice during the regular season by identical 5-4 scores before dropping Saturday’s game. After allowing the hosts just one baserunner through the first three innings, senior hurler Chris Conkling and the Warriors ran into trouble in the top of the fourth frame. Goshen’s Darin Mast singled to lead off the inning before being thrown out trying to steal by Chad Jones. After Matt Chupp worked Conkling for a walk, the Redskins loaded the bases as Craig Stahly and Jorge
Academy, 388; North Manchester, 400; Argos, 400; Wabash, 404; Southwood, 406; Triton, 418, and Culver Community, 418. Tippecanoe’s Brandon Howard was medalist, scoring 78, while the Warsaw pair of Brian Elliott and Matt Van Osdol finished second and third, respectively, with scores of 79 and 80. Individuals qualifying for regional play include Troy Rippy, Plymouth, 85; Kevin Combs, Plymouth, 86, and Ty Baer, Northfield, 87. Cool weather greeted golfers when sectional action opened Monday morning, while those teeing off later in the day were able to take advantage of warmer conditions on the back nine. "Those that teed off early had to play all 18 holes in the cold and wind, while those teeing off later had nine holes of good weather,” Goshert said. However, he added, the breeze didn't have too much effect on the overall standings. Hadley, who was in one of the final groups teeing off, actually had a better score on the front nine. “When it comes down to it, the weather didn’t make that much (of a) difference,” Goshert said. Hoping for good weather on Friday, Goshert’s Warriors will prepare for the Norwood Golf Course with a practice round today (Wednesday) or tomorrow. Wawasee played on the Huntington course May 5 in the Homestead Invitational. “That was one of our better performances," Goshert remembered, noting that the Warriors finished fourth among a field of 16 teams. Baker led Wawasee with a ninehole total of 42. However, the competition will be more balanced this time around, with the top three teams from the Churubusco, Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Northridge, and Warsaw sectionals competing for the regional crown. Three teams will qualify for semi-state action in Indianapolis. “I think we’re going to have to shoot 317 or better to get out of there, although a lot depends on the type of weather we have,” the coach predicted. Hoping for sunny skies for the Warriors, Goshert concluded, “To get re-focused and get after it on Friday is really important.” Tuttle will begin action for Wawasee, teeing off at 10:28 a m. He will be followed by Baker, 10:42 a.m.; Cesco, 10:49 a.m.; Schmahl, 10:56 a m . and Hadley, 11:10a.m.

Camacho reached on errors. Eric Evans gave the hosts a 1-0 lead by drawing a bases loaded walk to force in Chupp. Brent Bontrager made the score 2-0 in favor of Goshen with a sacrifice fly that plated Stahly. The Warriors dodged further damage in the inning when leftfielder Geoff Coburn threw out Camacho at the plate as he tried to score on a basehit by teammate Brian Davis. “We played good defense throughout the tournament but a couple of plays in one inning today made the difference,” said Frantz. The Redskins pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning

as consecutive one-out singles by Scott Zoller, Mast and Chupp resulted in a run. After Conkling walked Chad Trenshaw to load the bases with just one out, Frantz brought in Adam Wilson who ended the threat by retiring the next two batters. The Warriors scored their only tally of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Jason Mickley singled, went to second on a wild throw by the catcher, advanced to third on a basehit by Wilson and then scored when Coburn beat out an infield hit. “The kids played hard all year and we had a good season. really disappointed for our seniors because I wanted them to go out on top,” admitted Frantz. On offense, Mickley paced the Warriors by collecting two of the team’s three hits. Conkling was saddeled with the loss while Brian Davis earned the win. Defeat Jimtown 4-1 An excellent pitching performance by Wilson, combined with some key hits by the Warrior offense, enabled Wawasee to come up with a 4-1 over Jimtown in sectional semifinal action Saturday. “This is a big win for us but our goal is to win it all,” said Frantz after the win over the Jimmies. “They’re a very good team but our kids just seem to keep rising to the occasion and getting the job done,” the coach added. Wawasee took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Jerry Smith doubled, took third on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Coburn. The Warriors added two more runs in the fourth to go up 3-0 as Stevens singled and later scored on a groundout by Wilson while Kevin Manning added the third run by scoring on a wild pitch. While the Warrior’s offense was taking advantage of its opportunities, the right arm of Wilson was keeping the Jimtown offense virtually shut down throughout the game. After allowing just three hits while striking out nine through the first five innings, Wilson was on track in raising his mark to 7-4. “Adam pitched great, just like he has the past 2-3 weeks for us, and our defense made the plays as well,” stated Frantz:. Wilson lost his bid for a shutout in the sixth inning when Chris Carithers reached on a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and then scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Nathan Remaly. Wawasee added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Conkling singled and pinchrunner Tim Bradley scored on a Mickley single. “Wilson threw well and was aggressive for them, but I think that we weren’t ready to play today and forgot to pack our bats,” commented Jimtown coach Mike Stout. Jimtown was without the services of star pitcher Mark Owens for the first three innings. Owens was out of town to attend a relative’s funeral and was unable to enter the, game until the fourth inning, after the Warriors had taken command. The lefthander had led the Jimmie staff during the regular season, with an 11-1 record. Owens recorded 115 strikeouts in 83 innings and had a 0.93 ERA. Jimtown used righthander Jeff Newcomer in his absence. Newcomer entered the game with a 3-5 record and a 3.40 ERA.

Eisenhour makes all-state track team
(By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
Just when it appears that Kriss Eisenhour’s storybook track and field season is coming to a close, she makes an outline for another chapter. The most recent twist to her plot came on Friday when she took seventh place in the 300-meter hurdles during state track and field competition in Indianapolis. The 18-year-old senior finished the race in record time, establishing a new Wawasee school mark of 46.03 seconds. But the honors didn’t end there. As one of the two top seniors in the event, Eisenhour earned the right for a return trip to Indianapolis this weekend to compete on the Indiana all-star track team. The team will take on all-star squads from Michigan, Illinois and Ohio in the Midwest All-Star Track Meet on Saturday. Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) will host the inter-state event.
Stricklin named to All NLC softball team
Evelyn Stricklin and Nikki Jones provided a rare highlight for the Wawasee Lady Warriors softball program recently when they were named the AllNorthern Lakes Conference team. Stricklin, a slugging senior outfielder, made the first team of the honorary squad while Jones, a sure-handed third baseman, was an honorable mention selection. The Concord Minutewomen led all schools in first-team selections, with four. Goshen, Northridge, North Wood and Warsaw had three selections apiece, while Plymouth placed two players on the honorary squad.
“It’s the equivalent to our Indiana-Kentucky all-star game for basketball,” said Wawasee coach Troy Akers. Eisenhour looks forward to soaking in the atmosphere at the big meet. And she’s hoping to get her time in the 45-second range too. “I’m going to do the best I can, and have fun, and meet a lot of new people, and maybe get into the 455,” she said. To say that Eisenhour was surprised about making the all-state team would be an understatement. Prior to her race Friday, she didn’t know anything about the team or its selection process. “I didn’t even know about the (Midwest) meet until the coach said something about it afterwards,” she said. Eisenhour seemed to have reached the pinnacle of track and field achievement when she qualified for state competition. Little did she know that there was still one more rung left in her ladder of success. Junior Lisa Mikel was the other

Lady Warrior to compete at state competition Friday. Coach Akers said that she rah well in the 200-meter dash but was unable to qualify for the finals of the event. Akers was proud of the efforts that Eisenhour and Mikel put forth. They were the kind of efforts that helped carry the Wawasee team to a 10-2-1 record during the 1990 season. “That was just the culmination of a great season,” ,he said.
