Wawasee added a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings and three in the fifth while the Panthers only run came in the fifth. "We had three errors, which is too many, but we had a lot of good plays to counter that,” Wawasee coach Neil Frantz said, referring to a Warrior defense that made

several eye-catching plays throughout the contest. Senior Adam Wilson (6-4) limited the Panthers to one hit, which accounted for their solo run in the fifth inning, while he struck out four and walked four. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Homestead cranked out 11 hits en route to the victory. Twin sisters Becki and Bobbi Haab paced the Wawasee offense, with two hits apiece. Becki performed the rare feat of hitting two triples in one game, while Bobbi recorded a single and a double. Wawasee wrapped up the 1990 campaign with a 1-17 record.

Third baseman Chris Conkling complimented an impressive defensive performance with a good day at the plate, collecting two of the Warriors’ hits to account for a pair of runs batted in. Senior Adam Wilson also collected two hits, including one of the team’s three doubles. Chad Jones and Jason Mickley had the other doubles while Tim Lilly accounted for the other Wawasee hit. With the win, Wawasee earned the right to face sectional favorite Jimtown (18-9) in a semifinal contest at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Jimtown downed Fairfield, 9-4, to advance. In the other semifinal game, slated for 10 am., defending tournament champion Goshen (11-15) will face Bethany Christian (7-12). The two winners will return at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the South Bend Regional at Coveleski Stadium June 9. Hoping his 12-14 Warriors will have the opportunity to reach the .500 mark Saturday, coach Frantz realizes defense will be the name of the game against the Jimmies. “They do a good job of putting the ball in play and making their opponents play defense,” he said, adding, “If we get seven or eight hits we’ll have a good chance at winning the game." ever but it took about 50.1 or 50.2 to make it to state." said Wawasee coach Jerry Minton. Eberly also competed in the 200-meter dash, where he finished eighth with a time of 16.28. Teammate Mike Bailey was another Warrior who fell into the ‘‘close but no cigar" category. He finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.9. Bailey's time was just a half second away from the school record, but it still wasn’t good enough to qualify him for state. Freshman Kyle Newcomer competed in the discus at Kokomo but couldn't make any headway against the tough field of competitors. Newcomer will have plenty of future opportunities to make it to state but it was the last hurrah for the talented senior tandem of Eberly and Bailey. "Eberly and Bailey were just an eyelasty away but that’s what

teams from meeting in a regular season contest scheduled for May 12. Jimtown will be looking for an effective outing from senior standout Mark Owens, who will most likely get the starting nod. Owens is 11-1 with an 0.93 earned run average, 115 strikeouts and 29 walks in 83 innings. “We’re hoping to just be able to score a few runs off of Owens. The key will definitely be defense,” Frantz

Team Awards When the Warriors gave out team awards at Wawasee High School last night (Tuesday), there was never any question about who would win Most Valuable Athlete honors. Eberly’s record-setting performances in 1990 made him a shoein for the award. He set a school record in the 400-meter dash (50.6) and tied the record for the 100-meter dash (11.1). His 184*/2 point total was the second highest in school history. Eberly also received the Outstanding Achievement Award. emphasized. Wawasee will present Jimtown with a formidable challenge on the mound as well. Coming off his impressive outing against North Wood, Wilson will be searching for his fourth consecutive complete game performance. “He has to pitch well for us to do well,” Frantz deadpans, noting that the Warriors best defense is in effect when Wilson is on the mound. “Having Adam there
