Crankbaits: The angler's favorite
Many fishermen are confused about the different types of hard plastic crankbaits, their functions, and their depth capabilities. Here is a listing of six common varieties of crankbaits and their chief characteristics! 1) Top water lures, such as a STORM Chug Bug, are fished only on the water surface. These lures do not dive. Top waters can be most effective in spring, summer, and fall. 2) Shallow diving crankbaits are usually small-sized lures with short diving lips. Shallow running lures, such as a Thin Fin, normally dive less than 6 feet on a retrieve and are effective spring-time baits. This size of bait harmonizes well with light tackle — rods, reels and line. 3) Medium diving crankbaits fit a variety of fishing depths and are the most commonly used size. They are easy to cast and troll well. An all-purpose lure, such as the STORM Wiggle Wart, can be used in almost any fishing situation because its size is comfortable to use and is comparable in size to most baitfish. It can be used year round. 4) Large deep-diving lures have recently become very popular in fishing circles. Maximum depths of 18-30 feet can be attain-

ed with this group of lures, which included the Magnum Hot ‘N Tot. Deep water trolling is the main method of usage so as to cover large areas of water. Cast and retrieve can also be implemented. They are commonly used in the summer, fall and winter, when fish are down deep. 5) Stick baits, like the STORM Thunder Stick, are long and slim in shape and can be shallow divers (approx. 2-6 feet) or deep divers (10-20 feet), depending on the length of the diving lip. An effective technique is to twitch the lure, simulating an injured fish. These lures resemble smelt and minnows, two basic types of baitfish. 6) Rattling sonic-vibrator, like a Texas Shad or Lil’ Tes, have lead weights that provide two features: easy casting and control of depth. These lures can function as casting, trolling or jigging baits. With this easy reference at hand, you can visit your local fishing tackle or sporting goods store and acquire the lures best suited for your fishing needs or write to STORM LURES, P.O. Box 720265, Dept. E, Norman, Okla. 73070-4199 for a free catalog featuring these lure types.
