Since 1970, the services have been held at the Oakwood Hotel beach, known as Oakwood Park. When the services were first held, only an elite group of area pastors were responsible for sponsoring the weekly worship times. Today, sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, a number of area churches are involved. The Sunday services from June 10 to September 2 often attract in excess of 100 boats.
I I JlaL. Hhs I SERVICES AT WAWASEE — This is just a small part of the group of boats which gathers every Sunday morning at Oakwood Park during the summer, in addition to the boatloads of summer visitors to Lake Wawasee, many other worshipers gather on the shores to hear the weekly sermon delivered by area pastors. The summer Boat-In Worship services are sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association.
Boat-in services at Oakwood Park continue
By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer Over 20 years of worship is continuing this summer when boat-in church services at Lake Wawasee’s Oakwood Park resume. Now sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, the boat-in services were first held at the Oakwood Hotel beach in 1969. The unique worship services began as a coffeehouse program at the Waco Beach and Drive-In area, next to Mock’s Marina. In 1969, sponsors for the weekly event were Rev. Ken Robinson of Calvary United Methodist Church, Rev. August Lindquist of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, and
Rev. Harlan Steffen of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, and the Church of The Brethren pastor. One Sunday morning a local adult supporter of the program, which then involved youth of the area, came by water. John Goldman tied his boat to the pier and suggested that the group sit by the water’s edge for Sunday worship, like at Galilee. The next year, the summer Boat-In Worship service was initiated. Since the first meeting, when only 16 boats were present, the services have grown in popularity. Now often times more than 100 (Continued on page 15)
