The Yacht Club is just one club that caters to sailboaters, seen in full force during the summer months.

Hobies, Sunfish, and sailboats of all other names, colors and sizes may be seen traversing the 3,300 acres of Lake Wawasee. Competing with speedboats, pontoons and fishing boats for the waters of Wawasee, the sailboats may be the most beautiful seen on the lake, with a stiff breeze taking many on a view of the lake on a clear sunny summer day. Tom Leasor of Goshen is frequently seen with his 20-foot vessel, often taking a different crowd with each trip to the lake. “I’ve always got relatives and friends asking for a ride during the summer. It’s just so peaceful and relaxing to go out on Wawasee — it’s so big that it doesn’t seem crowded like a lot of lakes do.’’ Weekends find competing sailors of the

Wawasee Yacht Club and Wawasee Boating Association as they race their Lightning and E-Scow fleets on a shared course laid out on the north end of the lake. Favorable wind directions often prevail on the northern sector. Doug Anderson of the Wawasee Boat Company notes that a lot of sailboaters dock at the Southeast Bay Club. “They're a pretty active group,” he says, adding, “Occasionally we'll even see a 27-footer on the lake.” The Crows Nest Yacht Club also provides sailing pleasure, with members from Fort Wayne, South Bend and other areas. Sailing vessels of all sizes can be seen docked at the Yacht Club’s grounds on Lake Wawasee.
