Fourth annual golf tournament to benefit Cancer Society

By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer For the fourth consecutive year, the American Cancer Society and Kosciusko County are joining forces to sponsor a Golf Championship Tournament' to benefit individuals with cancer. For Bill Fowler, general chairman of the event, organizing the tournament is more than just a voluntary effort — it is an act of love. Bill’s younger sister has been diagnosed as having the disease. It was mainly because of her condition that he became so heavily involved with the American Cancer Society’s golf tournament. To be held on Monday, July 30, the golf tournament will be limited to 72 teams of four golfers. A shotgun start will begin at 8 a.m. at the South Shore Golf Club, Syracuse, with a scramble format in both the men and women’s divisions. Hosting the day long event will be sportscasters Chris Schenkel of Lake Tippecanoe and Hilliard Gates of Fort Wayne. Schenkel and with Tom Hughs have been named the honorary co-chairmen for the tournament. The first American Cancer SocietyKosciusko County Golf Championship Tournament was held in 1987 at South Shore. Tom Tuttle, owner of the golf club and Dave Cotton of Cotton & Cotton Insurance started the event simply as a fund raiser for cancer patients. At the 1987 tournament with just 120 golfers, a total of $9,000 was raised. Since then, the annual total has increased dramatically with $21,000 raised in 1988, and $37,000 raised last year. This year, the committee hopes to get 288 golfers and raise $50,000. Denny Hively and Dan Arthur are serving as co-chairmen for the golf tournament while Mike Umbaugh and Mike Mangus serve as corporate solicitation chairmen. Jim Caskey is the finance chairman and Kip Schumm is acting as publicity chairman.

The tournament will be kicked off on Sunday, July 29, with an auction. At 6 p.m. items such as an all expense paid trip for two to California, five boxes of steaks, color televisions, and 156 cases of Coke, all donated by various local merchants, will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. The auction, which is being organized by Tom Tuttle and Dave Cotton, will be held at the South Shore pavilion. Also set for Monday, July 30, are tennis and bridge tournaments. No location for the tennis tournament has yet been decided upon, says Bonnie Umbaugh, tennis chairwoman. The bridge tournaments will be played in various homes around the Syracuse area. Players will be notified ahead of time to where they will be playing. Helen Alfrey is the bridge chairwoman. A cook-out style dinner will follow the golf tournament Monday evening. Additionally, golfers may win an opportunity to play at the Doral County Club in Miami, Fla. And, if some lucky golfer happens to make a hole-in-one, they will receive an Explorer Van, donated by Steve Kessler. For additional information or to register for any of the tournaments, phone 457-5711.
