Bicycling in the Lakeland area is fun
By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer Bicycling. It can be one of the most relaxing, leisure activities there is, or it can be done with toned thighs and muscular calves in mind. Truly the activity for everyone. With the beautiful scenery offered around the lakes, many families enjoy slow, quite bike rides on the area’s winding roads. For those cyclists wanting to enjoy the summer days on the bike trails touring the Lakeland area, some points of interest worth seeing may be the water side parks of Syracuse, Milford and North Webster, the old Fish Hatchery near Lake Papakeechie, or just viewing the beautiful homes around Indiana’s largest natural lake, Lake Wawasee. Still, rich in history and many built decades ago. many area churches provide wonderful sight-seeing options. Other worth-while sights include an historic landmark of the Continental Divide, located on SR 13 just north of North Webster. The upward climbs are sure to provide a good work-out and tone those lower body muscles. But all bicyclists should take plenty of safety precautions while out and about this, and every, season. For safer, more enjoyable cycling, consider these tips from Bicycling Magazine. • By far. the most important safety device is a sturdy helmet. Choose one that offers maximum protection, is lightweight and adjusts easily, and has good ventilation. For racing, choose a shape that minimizes wind drag. • Don’t rely on the reflectors — standard equipment on bicycles — since they won’t ensure visibility. Clip-on lights run by a battery or generator help make sure motorists will see a bicycle on the road during periods of darkness. • Rear-view mirrors are not standard equipment on bikes but are favored for safety- • Check the tires for cuts in the tire casing or protruding glass or nails before each ride. Using a pump with a built-in tire gauge, be sure your tire is adequately inflated. • Good sunglasses not only block the sun,
smooth, fresh feeling for hours. • Water, water — Never underestimate the relief powers of good old cold water. Run in on your pulse points, splash in on your face and drink plenty of it to cool off your insides. You can even fill a bucket with it and soak your feet — you’ll bee surprised how this cools off your whole body!
