Fashion statement: Be yourself

Ah, summer fashion! The fashion statement of the summer is be yourself; let your own personal style come through. Whatever your tastes Lakeland area fashion retailers have just what you want. Fashion retailers agree extremely brief swimsuits will not be as popular in the Lakeland area this summer as they might be in other areas. That is certainly good news for those who have gained a few pounds during the winter months. According to area retailers, area lakes will be visited, in general, by more modestly covered swimmers. Os course, retailers agree that Junior swimsuit styles will be less conservative than their Missy counterparts. The look this year is crinkly and colorful, according to JoLynn Leake, assistant manager at Kline’s Department in Warsaw. And the brighter, the better! Neon colors are penetrating hair accessories, swimsuits and leisure clothing. Area retailers say the trend in accessories is big. Jewelry will be chunky. Bigger, longer earrings will be accenting bronzed complexions this summer. The material of choice is easy-care cotton. “Anything that is not ironed is in style,” said Alice Rinker, manager of Rinker’s Family Store of North Webster. For the kids and the kids-in-all-of-us, the basic cotton Tshirt is back with a few new twists. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the New Kids on the Block and The Simpsons are making their summer wardrobe debut, and Rinker says they are selling a lot. On the dresser side, Tshirts with appliques are popular summer gear, according to Marise Smith, owner of Marise's in Wawasee Village. The spandex craze seems to have died down this year. But although Spandex appears not to be as popular this year as last, don’t lose hope. Area retails agree that warm summer temperatures may give renewed life to your Spandex wardrobe. This summer as always, the traditional look is fashionable. Simplicity is timeless, and a requirement for all summer clothing is comfort. Thus, it’s not surprising that florals and pastels are beginning to gain

ground on the neons at some Lakeland area retail shops. “This year we are seeing florals and a lot of knits in women’s fashions,” said Leake. Expect big-legged shorts and split skirts to be more visible this summer, too. According to Smith, “Skorts, a shorter version of the split skirt, are coming in stronger this summer. ” In any case, whatever the style, material or color, comfort is the word for summer fashion. Practice sports safety when you're outdoors An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. 1. Take along a companion when engaging in an outdoor sport. 2. Wear reflective materials when riding, running or walking at dawn, dusk, or at night. A variety of these items are available at your local sporting goods or automotive store. 3.
