Drinking and driving don't mix on the area lakes either

Drinking and driving isn’t just a problem for the automobile industry. There are plenty of boating accidents caused by people who mix alcohol with driving. Operating a boat on the waterways can be a challenge for someone who is stone sober. So when a person tries to do it when he’s drunk, he’s just asking for trouble. Boat operators have to deal with a large number of factors when they travel on water. The wind, sun and waves can have a disorientating affect on a person, and that disoriented feeling is much worse for a person who’s motor skills have already been impaired by the effects of alcohol. “You have a lot of things working against you that you don’t have working against you in a car,’’ said Coast Guard Auxiliary member Sue Gaugler. And, of course, a car driver can just pull off the road and stop if he thinks he isn’t capable of operating his vehicle safely. A boat operator has to make it all the way back to the shore.

MAKING PLANS — At an executive session of the Kosciusko County Fair Board Association, plans were discussed for the upcoming county fair. This year’s fair will run from Aug. 5-11 and features familiar rides and 4-H events. A special emphasis, though, has been placed on having various bands — from country to rock to big band sound — perform each night during fair week.

County fair to be held August 5-11

The Kosciusko County Fair will kick off on Sunday, Aug. 5, this year on the county fairgrounds, located off Smith Street in Warsaw. Lasting until Saturday, Aug. 11, the fair will be much like it has been in years past. On Sunday, a gospel sing will be featured on the grandstand to open the week, and 4-H events begin with the cat and dog show. During the day on Monday will be the 4-H dairy goat show. That night at 7 p.m. is the official opening of the fair, with the traditional cutting-of-the-ribbon by the fair queen. Featured free on the grandstand Monday evening will be “Sugar & Spice,” a musical/comedy group, playing music of the '4os, 'sos and ’6os. On Tuesday, 4-Hers have a big day with judging of pigeon, poultry and waterfowl, plus the rabbit and swine shows. At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday will be the Cutie King and Queen competition, followed at 7:30 by the music of Charlie McLaine and Wayne Massey.

Drunk people aren’t exactly the best swimmers in the world, either. A person increases his chances of drowning considerably when he drinks and drives a boat. That goes for passengers too. It’s more important that the driver of a boat stays sober, but it’s a good idea for passengers to keep control of their faculties too. A day on the lake with a cooler full of beer may sound like a lot of fun, but it could turn into tragedy if an accident were to occur. A sober person can drive a boat for his passengers but he can’t swim for them . . . there can be no such thing as a designated driver in boating. Section 14-1-5-2 of the Indiana Boating Laws pamphlet states that a person who operates a watercraft: (1) “with ten hundredths percent or more, by weight of alcohol in his blood; or (2) while intoxicated; commits a Class C misdemeanor.” Legal jargon aside, mixing alcohol with boat driving just isn’t smart. Anyone w'ho plans to operate a vessel this summer should do all their drinking on solid ground.

Wednesday is Kiddies Day from 1-5 p.m., with special activities, drawings, clowns, games and contests. 4-H will hold beef, pony and sheep shows. During the evening, a demolition derby will be held, and the Dixieland All-Star Band will be performing in the activities tent. Senior Citizens Day is Thursday. Also on Thursday will be the 4-H dairy show, halter competition for horses, and the supreme showman contest for six different species. That night, the rock ’n roll band “Hot Pursuit” will be playing in the grandstand, while the “Other Four” will feature its big band sound in the activities tent. A second Kiddies Day is slated for Friday. Horse riding competition and the livestock auction are scheduled for 4-H. In the evening, the “Millstream Band" will perform in the activities tent, and a semi-truck pull will be the entertainment at the grandstand. Saturday, the closing day of the fair, will see auto races in the grandstand, and more 4-H horse competitions.
