ROAD MARKER — Not too many people realize that there is actually a continental divide in Kosciusko County. Moreover, some people may not even know what a continental divide is, that is, besides a movie starring John Bulushi. At any rate, yes, there is a continental divide in the Lakeland area. The American Heritage Dictionary says a continental divide is “an extensive stretch of high ground from each side of which the river systems of a continent flow in the opposite direction.” The continental divide in Kosciusko County is easy to get find if you are looking for it. Even better, it’s free. But, as Linda Arnold, Director of the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau, advises, wear your walking shoes. The continental divide is located in the middle of the land area, approximately six miles south of Syracuse on SR 13. A sign on the east side of the road marks the location and tells about the continental divide. It separates the Great Lakes drainage system from the Mississippi drainage system. This means that rivers on one side of the divide flow to the Great Lakes and rivers on the other side of the divide flow to Mississippi River. (Photo by Julie Moore)
