After 12 years, Rev. Lindemood is leaving

By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer

Rev. Rex Lindemood, pastor of the North Webster United Methodist Church, will be delivering his last sermon in the Lakeland area after 12 years at the pulpit. On Sunday, May 27, Rev. Lindemood will probably speak on friendships and say farewell for now, to a community he so cherishes. Rev. Lindemood came to the North Webster church on October 15, 1978. Since that time he has seen the struggles and the successes of the church and its faithful followers. He has been responsible for the church’s initiation of the day care center and has worked diligently to see to it that the congregation will have a new church to worship in. “My most meaningful accomplishment (at North Webster) has been the day care center,” he nods assuredly. With the efforts of Don and Gayle Harris, Rev. Lindemood was able to

CALVARY CHOIR TO PRESENT PROGRAM — This Sunday, May 27, the Chancel Choir of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Syracuse, under the direction of Dr. Robert L. Jones, will present a program of favorite anthems at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services of worship. The selections were based on words of appreciation from the congregation as well as being the favorites of the director and members of the choir. The program will include the following: “Judge Me, O God,” by Felix Mendelssohn, arranged by Charles Ziemer; “I Need Thee Every Hour,” by Lowery and Hawks; “Lord, I Believe In You," by Gordon Young; “Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord,” from Psalm 55:22 with music by Benjamin Harlan; “Hush, Somebody’s Callin’ My name,” a traditional spiritual arranged by Brazeal Dennard; “The Lord’s Prayer,” by Leroy Robertson; "I Must Tell Jesus,” by Elisha Hoffman and arranged by Mary McDonald; and completing the pro-

put the day care center into effect and has watched it prosper. Proud to be one of an elite group that gave children a place for warmth, shelter, and companionship. A place parents trust. But he has been responsible for numerous other good fortunes the church has received. During his pastorate, the North Webster United Methodist Church purShased Wesley Hall and an adorning property lot which is now used as a playground for the day care center. And, he has made it possible for construction on the new church building to begin. Although Rev. Lindemood has no control over where the Methodist church assigns him, he says he looks forward to the challenge of a new town and a new church. He presently ministers to a congregation of 430 members but after June 1, will begin serving the 550 members of the Dyer-based church. Saying that he and his wife, Verna, plan to return to their cot-

tage on a Little Barbee Lake channel after retirement, Rev. Lindemood gives his opinion of North Webster. “After 12 years you understand the make-up of a community. No one here believes it but this is one of the most urban areas in the state of Indiana. It’s someplace between commuter suburbia, rural America, and the best recreation area of the state. Most of the population is from someplace else and very mobile.”

Looking back on his 12 years spent with the North Webster church, Rev. Lindemood examines what he feels has been the church’s strengths through the years. “The church is active and has a better appeal to families. The church is not dominated by retired people anymore and the population base is younger.” Being the pastor of a congregation he refers to as close and caring of one another, Rev. Lindemood says, there is always room for

compassion. “We all must constantly be aware of a caring fellowship.” Rev. Lindemood and Verna plan to move to Dyer on June 5. The new pastor Rev. Rick Taylor, and his wife, Rae, and two children, Andrea, age 7, and Christopher, age 4, will begin their pastorate in North Webster on June 24. The family is scheduled to arrive in town no later than June 14.

Syracuse. The assembly featured internationally known speakers, musical events, a vast array of exhibits, workshops, Bible study and worship events. Concerns for the environment and for children were major themes of the four-day event held in the Kansas City Convention Center. Speakers included Marian Wright Edelman, Washington, D.C., civil rights activist and advocate for children, and Noel Brown, Jamaica, a leading United Nations environmental official. “Witnesses for a New World” was the theme of the assembly. More than 50 focus groups explored a wide range of topics from prayer and spiritual disciplines to ways of preventing further damage to the earth. The Women’s Division of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries sponsors the event, which is held every four years. United Methodist Women are currently engaged in a Campaign for Children. The assembly offering goes to work with children and youth. Grants will be made to projects in this country and throughout the world. Women from many countries of the world were present, along with missionaries, deaconesses and other mission workers. “Only a redeeming love centered in Christ, rooted in community and responsive actions, compelled by conscience, can transform our fragile planet into a new world, faithful to God,” states the call to the assembly from Sally Graham Ernst, national president, and Theressa Hoover, associate general secretary. ONE LAST LOOK — Rev, Rex Lindemood of the North Webster United Methodist Church took one last walk around the construction site of what will soon be the new UMC. With the generous donations from the congregation, Rev. Lindemood made the church construction possible. Although taking a great interest in the church’s progression, Rev. Lindemood will never get the opportunity to minister within its walls. He and his wife, Verna, will be moving to Dyer in early June where Rev. Lindemood will assume new pastorate duties. He looks forward to moving back to the North Webster area following his retirement. (Photo by Stacey Lesch)
