Moser steps down —
Syracuse Retail Merchants seeking to solve problems
| By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer
The growing number of Syracuse merchants showing a lack of interest and involvement in community activities may force the folding of the Retail Merchants Division of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce. “Everyone says they’re supportive but no one takes the time to help.’’ said treasurer Jeanne Gardiner, assistant vice president of Lake City Bank.
Final decision on Amtrak pending
(Continued from page 1) Kosciusko County, including Warsaw’s mayor, Jeff Plank, joined together to retain a countystop. Nappanee officials also indicated their interest in the rail service. Amtrak officials decided on the route changes because they will remove both trains from a littleused freight track and place them on mainline tracks which will be maintained for higher freight and passenger speeds. These route shifts also will remove the possibility of Amtrak’s having to meet costs associated with maintaining passenger service on the Conrail line.

Speaking to President Judy Moser and one other merchant in attendance, Gardiner continued. ■'We're the mom and pop businesses and don't have time to get involved with a lot of community affairs.” For several months, the Retail Merchants Division has been struggling to get more merchants to the meetings and become active in the organization. At least since the first of the year they have stressed a need for more involvement with the suggestion of hiring a paid director to oversee operations of the chamber of commerce and activity surrounding their own organization.
Though at that time, it was thought that a decision on this possible additional stop would be made within a few weeks, these two communities vying for rail service are still waiting for Amtrak's final word. Prepared by Schumm and Bill Spurgeon, the information packet will reach the hands of Amtrak officials this week. Given reports that Amtrak would like to begin stopping on the new route by July 15. Schumm said a decision on passenger service should be made soon. First smokers The Spanish were the first to smoke cigarettes.
Wanting to keep the organization going, Gardiner and Moser will be sending notices out to all Syracuse merchants hoping to get a large attendance for the June 8 meeting where new officers will be chosen. The meeting will be held at the Syracuse Town Hall at 8 a m. At the Friday, May 4, meeting, only three merchants including Gardiner, Moser and Bob Goad, owner of The Wallpaper Shoppe, were present. They began the
